The love of easter eggs in video games has nothing to do with a giant bunny, but rather the exploration and wonder of what you find. Many video games love to reference popular culture as a nod or homage because the game developers themselves are also fans. Video games just happen to be the latest medium to included references to popular culture. Finding easter eggs in beloved game franchises are always nice and adds fun to the game overall. Sometimes various game publishers will add small easter eggs from their own line of games, or reference beloved franchises like Super Mario Bros.

Many games add easter eggs that are hidden but did not make it past post-production or are sometimes hidden by the development staff. Psychonauts is famously known for having an easter egg of a developer's girlfriend hidden in the game. Sometimes hidden within the game code, many data miners will find references to popular media or hidden image files that did not make it to the final product. World of Warcraft has had a long lineage as being one of the best MMORPGs since 2004. With every expansion the game developers at Blizzard will add small mentions, NPCs, quest lines, or quotes to things they love or what is popular in mainstream media. They can range anywhere from television, comic books, novels, movies, fads, clothing lines and almost anything you could think of. Here are the 15 MUST SEE easter eggs in World of Warcraft that you should see for yourself!

15 Friends

Friends is one of the best sitcoms of the early 90s and it lasted for 10 seasons. Many people were fanatically in love with Friends to the point that television audiences were invested in the lives of these hilarious and endearing characters. In World of Warcraft: Legion, there is an easter egg to this beloved 90s sitcom. This is an easy easter egg to find, your first step is to head to the city of Dalaran. Then make your way to the Runeweaver Square and check out the Legerdemain Lounge. You will find to big couches in the middle of a familiar coffee shop. Roscoe, a human male, is sitting across Rachelel, a blood elf female. This is a nod to two characters from Friend's as Ross and Rachel.

14 Destiny

Destiny is a sci-fi shooter with lite MMO aspects that caught the gaming world by storm in 2014. Bungie developed Destiny as an “online-shared world” game on consoles. World of Warcraft and Destiny are owned by the same company, so it's no surprise that Blizzard included a Destiny easter egg. Head to the city of Dalaran and check the area known as Antonidas Memorial. There you will find an ethereal vendor known as Xur'ios who only accepts payments of curios coins. This is a reference and nod to Destiny's Xur, a vendor who trades exotic weapons and armor in exchange for strange coins. Xur'ios inventory also nods to items and weapons from Destiny. Xur'ios sells items like Gjallar's Ho༒rn, Krota's Shﷺield and Mote of Light.

13 Lion King

World of Warcraft does not limit easter eggs to only quests, NPCs and items. Their achievements are also full of references to popular culture and other games. Once a player has completed the required quests in Azsuna; they unlock the “Azsuna Matata” achievement. This is a nod to The Lion King's song and phrase known as “Hakuna Matata.” Once all the required quests in Highmountain are completed, you unlock “Ain't No Mountain High Enough.” This achievement acknowledges Marvin Gaye's hit song “Ain't No Mountain High Enough” released in 1967. By completing all the quests in Val'sharah, you unlock “That's Val'sharah Folks!” This is a reference to Porky Pig from The Looney Tunes by Warner Bros💯. Porky Pig would always end his 𝄹cartoon shorts with the phrase “That's All Folks!”

12 Zoolander

Ben Stiller has starred in several comedic movies like Meet The Fockcers, There's Something About Mary, and Dodgeball. One of his best movies is Zoolander, a comedy about a dumb but famous male model named Derek Zoolander. Mr. Zoolander has to stop evil fashion executives from assassinating the Prime Minster of Malaysia. World of Warcraft included a Zoolander easter egg in the Warlords of Draenor expansion. Head to Draenor and in south side of the Ashran island you will find Stormshield. You must be an Alliance character or be a stealth class if you are Horde. There you will find a NPC named Zaalendor; who has mastered three posing styles: Azure Steel, Le Talbuk, and Magnum. These are nods to Zoolander poses named Blue Steel, Le Tigre, and Magnum.

11 Conan the B🐟arbarian 🐼

Conan the Barbarian is a famous fantasy hero created by Robert E. Howard. Conan became popular in magazines which then spread to various mediums like books, comics, movies and games. Arnold Schwarzenegger famously played the lead role as Conan in the 1982 film adaptation. World of Warcraft has two easter eggs that pay tribute to the original source material and the film version of Conan. In the Badlands, there is a crypt southeast from Hammertoe's Digsite. Inside the crypt, the player will find a skeleton sitting on a throne. This is a nod and reference to Conan finding the Atlantean sword of a dead king inside a crypt. Also in the Warlords of Draenor, you will find a NPC named Arnold Croman. Arnold Croman is an amalgamation of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Conan. This NPC will also recites lines from other famous Arnold Schwarzenegger movies like Terminator. A player 🥃can add him as a follower once you have rescued him in the Bloodhaul Slag Mines.

10 LOST

LOST was a popular show in the early 2000s and was co-created by the beloved director of Star Trek and Star Wars, J.J. Abrams. LOST was about about a group of survivors surviving on a mysterious island after their commercial airplane crashed. The show went on for ten seasons and is an intriguing show mixed with sci-fi and supernatural elements. However, the ending of LOST caused a lot of controversy because many story threads were left unanswered or simply ignored. World of Warcraft: Wrath of The Lich King added a subtle but awesome easter egg in the continent of Northrend. Head to Sholazar Basin and swim to a small island in Bittertide Lake. There you will find a small hatch on that tiny island, and a note that reads “5 9 16 17 24 43.” This is an easter egg to LOST season one in which a hatch was created by the DHARMA Initiative. The numbers in LOST were “4 8 15 16 23 42.”

9 Up

Disney's Up released in 2009 becoming both critically and financially one of Disney's best films. Up made more than $700 million in box offices worldwide and won five academy awards including Best Picture. Up is about a senior citizen, Carl, fulfilling his promise to his late wife by going exploring in South America. World of Warcraft: Mists of Panderia introduced a fun and loving nod to Up. Head to The Jade Forest, and on top of a mountain you will see a house with several balloons attached to it. There you will find a panderan named Kar, his grummie named Rusty Nail, and a fox named Dig. These NPCs are the equivalent characters of Carl, Rusty and Dug from Up.

8 Starcraft

Here is another easter egg included from another Blizzard game, Starcraft. World of Warcraft never skims on promoting its own games through various easter eggs. Several Goblin Shredders around Azeroth will show a picture of Sarah Kerrigan from Starcraft: Brood War. Kerrigan is famously the Queen of Blades and leader of the Zerg faction in Blizzard's popular RTS game. She was once a terran ghost who had a romantic relationship with Jim Raynor, but was betrayed and later infested by the Zerg swarm. The Sky Golem is a flying mount that borrows a similar design to the Goblin Shredder. Inside the cockpit you will find an updated picture of Kerrigan from Starcraft 2 on its monitor.

7 Indiana Jones 🌸

In 1981, Raiders of the Lost Ark introduced an action, adventure hero known as Indiana Jones. Indiana Jones is an archaeologist and adventurer created by both George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. Harrison Ford played the iconic role in all four films between 1981 and 2008. These films were inspiration for popular games franchises like Tomb Raider and Uncharted. World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade introduced an NPC named Harrison Jones in Zul'Aman. In Wrath of The Lich King, you can find Harrison Jones exploring Drakil'jin Ruins in Grizzly Hills. In Cataclysm, he becomes the archaeology trainer in Stormwind and is the main quest giver in Uldum. Harrison Jones sports Indiana Jones🍸' famous trademark hat and whip and in Drakil'jin Ruins h𒐪e will mention he hates snakes.

6 📖 The Legend of Zelda 🌄

The Legend of Zelda is one of the most recognizable fantasy role playing games since the 1980s. Games like Gauntlet and Dungeons & Dragon have deeper fantasy elements, but Legend of Zelda has mainstream recognition; even though everyone mistakes Link's name for Zelda. World of Warcraft had originally, before cataclysm, a full quest line that started wꦺith “It's a Secret to Everybody” and ended with “Its Dangerous to Go Alone.” The player meets a NPC named Linken and the quest line involved going to several areas around Azeroth collecting items to help him remember and forge his sword. The final quest would reward the player with Linken's Sword of Mastery and Boomerang. These are references to Link's Master Sword and Boomerang. You can still find Linken in Mount Hyjal and participates in the quest “Protectors of Mount Hyjal.”
