The Academy Awards ceremony has been delayed for only the fourth time in its history, which also means the eligibility window just got a little bi🎀t bigger.
Pretty much every industry has been hit by the COVID-19 ou💃tbreak. Hollywood and the rest of the movie world continues to stඣruggle as theaters remain closed. Studios started to announce that release dates of blockbusters were being pushed back and postponed, in some cases indefinitely, back in March. Some movies have even had to be rescheduled twice due to an ambitious first move.
Something movie fans might not have considered is how that affects 2021's awards season. If none, or at least only very few, of the movies that were meant to be released in 2020 are pushed back to 2021, there will be no motion pictures to win BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and biggest of 📖all, the Oscars.
That's why, after much deliberation, the Academy has decided to postpone 2021's awards ceremony by two months. Variety reports that the ceremony, which 𒁏was originally slated to take place in LA on February 28, 2020, will now happen on April 25, 2020. Providing it isn't subject to any more delays, of course. That also means the window during which releases can be considered has also been extended by two months.
The usual qualifying window for movies is between January 1 and December 31 the year before the awards take place. However, the window for the 2021 Academy Awards has now been extended to February 28, 2021. As for the delay to the Academy Awards ceremony, this is only the fourth time in its 92-year history that it has been postponed. It was delayed in 1938 due to mass flooding, in 1968 following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., and a third time in 1981 after an assassination attem💝pt on President Ronald Reagan.
