Maybe you've only found a few pieces as you go looting through cities or non🐼e at all, but you want to get started on making iron tools and better armor. If you ne𒅌ed a good stockpile of coal, we'll tell you the best places to find some.
How To Get Coal
There are three main ways you can find coal, and it's possible to start gathering it soon after you start the game so that you can have a decent amount saved by the time you get a Forge:
- Breaking down any charred wood in fireplaces found inside houses and buildings with a Stone Axe or other harvesting tool.
- Mining it from Coal Ore, which is found randomly throughout the world both above and below the ground with a Stone Axe, Mining Pick, or other harvesting tool.
- Breaking down or chopping charred wood and trees found in the Burnt Forest or Wasteland biomes with a Stone Axe or other harvesting tool.
Your best bet is to go to the Burnt Forest for it, which can be found just south of the Forest biome you spawn in if you're playing on the map Navezgane.
If you're on Random World Gen, you'll need to search for it and keep watch for a horizon of dead and charred trees since it has a different map.
You'll want to have some food, water, and decent armor and weapons, like a Stone Sledgehammer, before going into the Burnt Forest, as Charred Zombies are tougher than the🎀 normal ones you start off seeing.
In the Burnt Forest, you'll have tons of spots where you can harvest Coal, as well as Wood at the same time, and the fairly flat terrain will give you good sightlines to keep watch for any approaching zombies.
If you aren't ready for the Burnt Forest, look for Coal Ore on the surface, which appears as large, black rocks, or find houses with chimneys, as they have a better chance of having at least one charred wood breakable.
