Ad Infinitum as a WW1 horror game. War is horrible, obviously, but even surviving the trenches can leave you scarred, as the game's initial trailer showed courtesy of a long-nailed monster that haunts the player's dreams.
The game first got started under Strixlab, but after three years, the company removed Ad Infinitum from the "games under development" section of its website. Then, German developer Hekat𝓀e announced that after a "long legal dispute" and "serious illness of an important team member" they had taken up development of Ad Infinitum.
There was no word on just what the legal battle was all about, but with Nacon as the publisher, it could very well have been similar to Frogware's dispute with The Sinking City.
Another long pause ended in 2019 , but then it was radio silence from Hekate until today’s “re-reveal” t🍎railer.
There's not a whole lot to report from the 40-second trailer. The same long-nailed creature steals a corpse before the camera pans out to reveal a crowded World War 1 killing field and then a brand new logo for Ad Infinitum.
The game still has the same general plot, with you playing as a traumatized German conscript coming home from The Great War. "Each night hallucinations filled with horrific creatures, death traps, and mysteries mark your path to recovery," writes Nacon. "Overcome them to free yourself from your✱ trauma and tear the veil of other, perhaps even more terrible mysteries.”
What’s more interes♊ting is the release window, which appears to be a very te𒆙ntative 2023 on PC and consoles. Even if Ad Infinitum sticks to that schedule, that’s still eight years of development across two developers working for a publisher with a history of getting into legal disputes with the studios it works with.
You can , but I wouldn't hold your breath for this one.
