Square Enix did a terrible joke taking care of the source code of its old games and it did an even worse job of removing debug tools and unnecessary assets in their finished games. It's for this reason that Final Fantasy VII fans discovered aও debug room within the files of the ga൲me.

The video game developers during the 16-bit and 32/64-bit eras never anticipated that fans would one day create the tools necessary for digging through the files of games. The fans were able to dump copies of popular games online and play them with emulators, but some created programs that would allow them to sift through the assets that would normally remain unseen. Websites like  archive these secrets, so that they can be seen by fans around tꦫheജ world.

For those who are unaware, a debug room is something that allows developers to instantly access different parts of a game with whatever setup they want. It's used for testing the game and making it easier to replicate circumstances that would cause a bug, so its source can be isolated. Final Fantasy VII has an extensive set of debug rooms that can only be accessed through cheating devices, and🅰 it contains a creepy secret that was never meant to be seen by fans. If the player enters room ten, they will find a giant Aerith who can transport them to different points in the game by picking from a list. The final entry on the list is "Hades", and if the player selects this, Aerith will say...

The player isn't sent anywhere after this statement, because they are already in Hades. The fact that the debug room exists in a series of black, endless voids is likely the reason for Aerith's statement. What's creepy about it is that the debug room was never meant to be seen by players. It's just a bizarre in-joke intended for the developers and localization team. The fact that Aerith is the one giving this statement, knowing her fate in Final Fantasy VII, makes it all the creepier.

Final Fantasy VII became theﷺ subject of numerous urban legends on the Internet, many of which were connected to Aerith's demise, and none of them were true. Mo🎶st fans were unaware that there was already a grim secret buried beneath the surface of the game.
