A new special collection expansion for the Po🤡kemon TCG has recently been revealed, and as expected, it’s all about the shinnies. Paldean Fates launches in January with over 100 shiny Pokemon to collect, and whiꦐle the Pyroar’s share of them will be from Gen 9, we know there will be at least three Shiny Charizards in the set, if not more.

Luckily, getting your hands on a Shiny Charizard, or a Shiny Tera-Type ex Charizard for that matter, won’t break the bank. One of the products the Pokemon Company has shown off for the new expansion is a tin that comes with a Shiny ✤Charizard ex promo card and a handful of Paldean Fates packs. There will almost certainly be more Shiny Charizards in this set, including a special illustration rare, a full-art ultra rare, and possibly even a gold hyper rare, so Charizard hunters have plenty to look forward to.

I say Charizard hunters with a hint of irony, because it feels like we’ve all been turned into Charizard hunters in recent years whether we like it or not. The previously mentioned Shiny Charizard ex promo likely looks familiar to you if you’re a Pokemon collector, it’s a shiny version of the Charizard ex full art from Obsidian Flames, the expansion from this past August. There was no Charizard in this month’s Paradox Rift expansion, but if we look back over the last two years, the𝓡re were Charizards in 151, Obsidian Flames, Crown Zenith, Lost Origin, and Brilliant Stars. There isn’t a Charizard in every expansion - the first two Scarlet & Violet sets were ‘zardless - but it shows up enough routinely enough that it’s become predictable, and kind of boring.

Pokemon TCG: Shining Fates Expansion, Shiny Gigantamax Charizard

Clearly not everyone feels this way. It’s hard to blame Pokemon for leaning on Charizard so much when it’s continued to move cards so consistently for the last 20 years. Charizard is always the most expensive card in any set it's printed in. Whether they enjoy collecting them or not, the value is there because people still believe Charizard is the top ‘Mon.

The way Charizard is positioned hasn’t always been in the game’s best interest. I was critical of the Darkness Ablaze expansion a few years ago because it felt like a glorified Charizard slot machine, but recent expansions have done a much better job 🔯of diversifying the interesting cards and giving us more worthwhile things to hunt aside from Charizard. This Pokemon’s appearance can even potentially benefit collectors of other Pokemon, as its inclusion tends to drive down the price of other chase cards in the sam🌄e expansion.

Still, it feels like about time for a nice break from the Zard. Maybe it’s naive to think it's going to wear out its welcome after all these years of reigning supreme, but they say absence makes the heart grow fonder, and I’d much rather miss Char than get sick of seeing it. A shiny expansion needs a Charizard of course, seeing as its black colours are some of the most iconic out of all shinies, so I’m not surprised to see it has such a big presence in Paldean Fates. But maybe it’s time to bench Charizard for a while. I know it's a money-maker, but this is Paldean Fates, and there is no Paldean Charizard afterall. Now that I’ve put that cursed idea out into the world, I’m going to go admire my lavish and very expensive collection of Charizard cards, while I wait to add another batch to the pile.
