The speed running event Awesome Gam🌊es Done Quick has had its biggest donation event in the ten years it's been running, raising $3,131,475 for the .
Twice a year, hosts an event– Awesome Games Done Quick in January, and Summer Games Done Quick in June. It lasts for an entire week, seven days straight with no breaks. It's its own convention, with panels and game roo💦ms and attendees from all over the world. But the main focus of the event are the speed runs.
Speed running a game is as it sounds– trying to beat a game or meet certain requirements as quickly as possible. There are Any% runs, usually involving doing just the basics necessary to complete the story; 100% runs, where you need to get most anything that can be quantified; and dozens of other categories in between. Speed runners often break the games, hunting for glitches an♒d skips to make the runs even faster. And of course, there are categories for that, a🏅nd for glitchless runs as well.
Near the end of this year's first event, on Saturday, the hosts spoke about the amount of money that GDQ has raised for charity– over $25 million. Ten years ago, the original Classic Games Done Quick event had a $5,000 goal and raised just over $10,000. The event and the organization has grown substantially, raising the staggering $3.13 million –and all of the donations, including bits cheered and subscriptions made during the month of January, all go direc𒈔tly to charity.
One of the main features of GDQ is the . Creators and companies will offer prizes, usually available to win for those who donated. These ranged from custom-made pearler sprites and homemade quilts and keychains, to a custom PC and even a massive Playstation prize pack that included a 1 TB PS4. Each prize has a different donation amount attached to it, and ones has to donate at least that amount during the time a prize is available to be entered in for a🧸 chance to win.
