During the Old Gods chapter of Alan Wake 2, I got stuck in the nursing home for close to 30 minutes. While looking for evidence that would explain Tor’s sudden disappearance, I made my way through each floor of the building, 𒐪checking each room for close and useful equipment. I examined Odin, met Ahti on the third floor, and had my first ha🐓ir-raising run-in with Cynthia. When it felt like I had fully explored every corner of the house, I returned back to the first floor, expecting something to happen. Nothing did.

I checked and re-checked every room, poured over the evidence board, and eventually retraced my steps back outside and all around the perimeter of the house. It seemed like there w𓆏as no way forward, and after half an hour of fruitless exploration, I decided I must be too stupid to figure out where to go next, and turned off the game. When I decided to try again the next day, something had changed. In the atrium, Rose had a dialogue prom𒅌pt, and speaking to her gave me access to the wellness facility next door. Clearly, a bug prevented Rose from speaking to me when she was meant to, but without having any way of knowing what was supposed to happen, hitting this bug felt a lot like being trolled.

Alan Wake 2 developer Remedy was sowing the seeds🧔 for the sequel all the w💧ay back in 2016.

Alan Wake 2 is an incredible game and a strong contender for my GOTY, but it’s also a buggy mess. I ran into every reported bug during my playthrough and a few that I haven’t seen anyone mention yet. Sometimes the screen would turn black during a gunfight, or my guns would just stop firing. Sections of the floor would occasionally fail to load in, and stepping in the wrong place would cause Alan to fall through the world infinitely. One time I got stuck in Saga’s Mind Place and there was no way to get out aside from turning off the game. I saw through walls, I got stuck in c🙈orners, I soft-locked myself by activating a light out of order. Name an Alan Wake 2 bug, and I was guaranteed to be a victim of it at one point or another.

Buggy games aren’t uncommon of course, but what makes Alan Wake 2’s bugs particularly diabolical is the way that they seamlessly blend in with the actual gameplay, to the point where you can never be sure whether or not what you’re experiencing is intentional. Falling through the floor is something that would happen to Alan in the Dark Place. The screen turning black during a battle is exactly the kind of thing that Remedy would do here just to mess with you. There is a major story beat towards the end of the game (spoilers) where Saga does get trapped in her Mind Place.🉐 Every time I ran into a bug, I always assumed at first that it was just Remedy being meta. I’m still not convinced that some of those bugs weren’t put there on purpose.

The most evil bug I encountered was at the very end of 🔥the game, inside the wellness facility next to the nursing home. When Scratch appeared at the end of the hall, I turned and high-tailed it back the way I came, just as I had done previously two other times in the subway tunnel and the Ocean View Hotel. I ran all the way back out of the hospital, but Scratch never let up. I led him up to the house, did laps around the gazebo, and even went back into the woods, but the Dark Presence would eventually catch up to me every time. I even tried to circle around and double back into the hospital, but there was nowhere I could go that the demon wouldn’t catch me. I watched Alan get consumed by darkness more than a dozen times before I finally gave up and looked up a video.

When other people play this sequence, they run away from Scratch, turn left at the end of the hall, and continue on until they find a safe room. When I ♒tried to do the same thing, I ran into a barricaded door every time. Not a closed door, not a locked door, a door that’s blocked by janitor equipment. Once I restarted the game, the door was wide open.

Alan Wake 2’s level design is built on dream logic and looping spaces that change in subtle ways each time you pass through them. It is common to pass by a closed door that’s mysteriously open the next time you see it, and in this sequence, the door you’re supposed to escape through isn’t open until Scratch starts chasing you. Not op🧔ening the door is downright evil and thematically on point, as though Scratch is rewriting the game’s code to stop you from helping Alan escape. For a game that routinely puts you in a room with no exit, the bugs do an incredible job of enhancing the sense of helplessness in Alan Wake 2.

Alan Wake 2 is the sequel to Remedy's hit survival horror game. It blends two separate stories into one, following FBI agent Saga Anderson as she investigates both a series of brutal murders and a story written by Wake himself.
