Episode Four of Alan Wake sees the main character and Barry Wheeler journey from Dr. Hartman's clinic to the Anderson Brother's farm. These brothers were in a band called the Old Gods of Asgard. Barry suggests that he will become this group's manager once they deal with the problem at hand. It comes off like a joke, but American Nightmare shows this as a true statement.
The story of American Nightmare is framed as happening in a TV motel room during an episode of Night Springs. The hotel room in question is Barry's, who is sleeping and is now the manager of the Old Gods of Asgard. The group also makes an appearance in Control, with one of their songs playing during the famous Ashtray Maze segment.

The two DLC episodes and American Nightmare can be seen as Alan's attempts to escape the dark place. Unfortunately, nothing has seemed to work. Although it seems like he can make small ripples in the real world, at least if American Nightmare's ending is any indication.
Once the credits roll, the camera cuts back to Barry Wheeler's hotel room where he wakes up and calls out Alan's name.
