Alien invasion games are hardly new. In fact, one of video gaming’s earliest successes – Space Invaders – belongs in this category. Eve♌ry year there are at least a few games that use an alien invasion as a plot device (not all of them are worth playing though).
To make this list, a game must feature a storyline involving an alien invasion, but not necessarily an alien invasion of Earth. This list is also being made with two other criteria: The game must be good and the somewhat recent (the seventh console generation or later). Therefore, games like Earthbound, whileꦑ incredibly fun, will not be included.
Updated on May 4, 2022, by Jeff Drake: It seems this genre of games gets more and more popular as time goes on. The freedom given to developers by using an invented alien species as the antagonists must be appealing. The only limit is the imagination. Every year there are at least one or two games that deserve to be on this list and about four or five that at least deserve consideration. There were also a few good alien invasion games that didn't quite make the cut for the original list.
15 Alien: Isolation 💯
There are very few games with the ability to give the player actual adrenaline-fueled moments of horror. 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Alien Isolation is one of those games. This game puts the player in control of Amanda Ripley, the daughter of Sigourney Weaver's character (Ellen Ripley) in the Alien movie franchise, as she tries to avoid the xenomorph that's hunting her. This experience is incredibly intense at times.
This survival-horror game is great to play in the standard way - on a televisioไn. However, the VR💙 version is the way to go and is considered one of the best VR games of all time.
14 ꦺ Crysis♔ 1 & 2
The Crysis games are famous for causing even the best of gaming rigs to beg for mercy. This series of games improves on the traditional FPS formula by 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:outfitting the player in a nanosuit that has a cloaking device and improves physical characteristics. Everyth༺ing about this game is fantastic. Fortunately, modern computers and consoles are able to play this game as🐟 smoothly as intended.
There will be many 🐽fights against human enemies in the Crysis games, but at its core, this game is an alien invasion game. In the Crys💎is games, it's discovered that a hostile alien species named the Ceph has operatives scattered across the globe. It's up to the player to end the threat and save the planet.
13 𒉰 Phoenix Point ꩲ
Anyone who has played 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Phoenix Point will immediately notice how similar it is to the XCOM games. This wasn't an accident; in fact Phoenix Point is intended to be a spiritual successor to the XCOM games. As such, this game is an alien invasion game featuring squad-based tactical combat.
The plot in Phoenix Point revolves around an alien virus, named the Pandoravirus, that mutates both humans and animals into violent, Lovecraftian cr💃eatures. At the game's start humanity has been reduced to small enclaves of survivors desperately fighting the alien invasion. This isn't as good as XCOM, but fans of that series will probably still enjoy Phoenix Point.
12 Half-Life💯 1 & ♏2
Nowadays it seems like the Half-Life series is more famous for never getting the third game in the series than anything else. Fans have been teased with Half-Life 3 rumors for over a decade; at least the first two Half-Life games are good enough to replay over and over.
In the first Half-Life game aliens from another dimension, called Xen, are released on Earth due to a failed science experiment. The protagonist, Gordon Freeman, must discover a way to close the portal to the Xen dimension. Ultimately, the player must enter the alien dimension and defeat the entity holding the portal open.
11 Destroy 🔯All Humans ♐
This classic duology began back in the days of the PS2 and Xbox. Over the years there have been spin-offs and remakes of these two games. The remake of the first Destroy All Humans, released in 2020, made the game more open-world. There is a remake of the sequel set to be released in 2022.
This game turns the alien invasion genre on its head by letting the player be the alien doing the invading. The player controls Crypto, a member of the Furon species. Crypto has been tasked with collecting Furon DNA from the brainstem of humans to help fix the genetic problems facing his species. This is one of the best games where you play as an alien.
10 Saints 💙Row 4 🍬
The 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Saints Row games have always been fun alternatives to the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Grand Theft Auto games. They feature a similar third-person play-style in an open world environment with unlockable mission trees. Both franchises also allow ♌players to drive and customize whatever vehicಌles they can find.
However, while the GTA series limits alien contact to close encounters of the first kind, Saints Row 4 uses an alien invasion as the main plot device. The world🦩 is overrun by aliens known as the Zin, who put humans in simulated environments (Steelport in this case) to break down humanity’s resolve. This is the only Saints Row game to have an alien invasion, but not the only one with sci-fi elements.
9 Halo 3
All the plot lines in Halo games are centered on alien invasions or fighting alien forces. All the Halo games are also good enough to make this list, but the consensus on the best in the series is Halo 3, by a narrow margin🏅 (according to Metacritic, anyway).
The Halo games are set in the twenty-sixth century, where Earth is being attacked by a theocratic consortium of alien races collectively known as the Covenant. The namesake of the series, the Halos, is an advanced weapon system built by an ancient alien race as a last resort to defeat an alien parasitical menace called the Flood. The protagonist is the iconic Master Chief of the Spartans.
8 Starcraft 2 ꦡ
Starcraft 2 is an interesting alien invasion game. There are three factions: Human, Zerg, and Protoss. No matter which faction the player chooses, they will be dealing with an alien invasion on some level – as well as being the invading aliens on occasion.
The original Starcraft was a classic real-time strategy game that remained relevant for well over a decade and is still immensely fun today. Starcraft 2 continues the storyline and manages to add to the near-perfect gameplay of the original. Units and factions are a little better balanced, al꧟though Zergling rushes early in multiplayer games and battlecruiser rushes late in multiplayer games are still very tough to counter.
7 🍒 Resistance 2🎐
The Resistance series were excellent first-person shooters released exclusively for the PS3. The trilogy’s storyline was based on an alternate timeline where aliens invaded Earth not long after the end of World War 2. Because of the events in the ga🐎mes, the weapons are a unique mix of classic and futuristic firearms.
In these games, Earth is overrun by a species called the Chimera that unleashes a virus that turns those infected against humanity. Many reviews on Metacritic proclaim it to be one of the better early FPSs for the PS3, even if the is quite a bit lower tha💛n the average criti𝄹c score.
6 NieR: Automata ✨
168澳洲幸运5开奖网:NieR: Automata is a sequel to NieR (though it has a stand-alone story), a game that earned its “hidden gem” status and still commands a reasonably hi💃gh price. These two games are set in the Drakengard universe.
Although NieR: Automata is primarily a third-person action/adventure game, there are times when it switches to a 2D side-scrolling or overhead view. In Automata, the Earth was invaded by machines from another world, with androids serving as Earth’s primary defense force. There are several꧋ plot twists in Automata𒀰’s complex storyline, but they will not be divulged here to prevent spoilers.
