"The movie is set up in a way [that] every time something bad is about to happen, you will see a phone," Álvarez said in an interview with . "In the game, every time you knew there's a phone you'd go, 'F--k, I'm about to get into some bad set-piece.' It's the same thing here.
"You'll see they're planted stategically throughout the film. When you see the phone, it's like, brace for impact."
Alien: Isolation Inspired Álvarez To Take On The Movie
Álvarez didn't just add the emergency phones for flavour, Isolation is what made him want to make an Alien movie in the first place; it proved to him that the series can still be scary even 45 years after the original was released. So, they're an homage to what inspired him to take on this project.

He played the game during Don't Breathe's release in 2016, his slasher movie about three thieves breaking into a man's house only for the tables to turn as he hunts them down one by one. Álvarez says that playing Isolation made him realise that he'd "love to do Alien and scare the audience again", returning to the tone of the original.
