Anime has been around for over a century, but it wasn't until the 90s that it saw mainstream success internationally, as many of its universal themes include persevering through obstacles. It was inevitable that we eventually would get to see our favorite series turn into a live-action movie or TV show.

9 Pokemon

Original Format / Release

TV Series, 1997

Desired Adaptation Format

TV / Multi-season

Pokemon follows Ash Ketchum, a ten-year-old who learns to become the best Pokemon trainer while challenging Leagues in order to become the Pokemon Champion. During his journey through the different regions, he befriends trainers, gym leaders, and Pokemon. It wasn't until recently, after 25 years, that he was able to become the champion of the Anola region's Pokemon League.

Despite seeing live-action Pokemon in Detective Pikachu, it doesn't follow any anime storylines. If a live-action Pokemon TV series is to be ordered, then a multi-season series makes sense. The first season should start with Ash as he follows most of the same journey as his Kanto League counterpart then end with Ash completing his journey on Kanto. The second season should pick up on Johto with Gold as the protagonist, with an appearance of Ash on Mt. Silver. With each new season, there should also be a new region with its respective video-game protagonist, as each trainer has to remain a ten-year-old starting their journey into the Pokemon training world.

8 Naruto

Naruto closeup protagonist shot

Original Format / Release

TV Series, 2002

Desired Adaptation Format

TV / Multi-season

Naruto has made a huge impact on the Shōnen genre with its well-choreographed fights and heavy themes for gaining respect and friendship. In his home village, Naruto Uzamaki is a loser outcast as he bears a cursed mark that seals a demon. Despite the odds against him, he becomes a Genin and is dead set on becoming the greatest ninja around, Hokage, by continuing his training, gaining new abilit♓ies, and going on missions.

As we binge throu♕gh the series, we will grow with the characters as they age through the seasons, eventually leading up to the time-skip in Shippuden. The series will mostly avoid filler for obvious reasons, but should keep moments where characte𓆏rs are expanded on or given more context.

7 Gurren Lagann 🍬

Gurren Lagann close up protagonist shot

Original Format / Release

TV Limited Series, 2007

Desired Adaptation Format

TV / Two Seasons

In Gurren Lagann humans are forced to live underground, as we follow our two teenage protagonists, Simon and Kamina, who wish to one day escape the mundane life in a buried village. Villagers must drill their way in order to expand their living space, and by chance, Simon is able to find a head of a Mecha with a drill key logged into it. This is a catalyst for the escape of the two teens and expands their horizons on this monster-written world that caused humans to hide underground. It's up to Simon and Kamino to inspire other hidden humans to join the fight and take back the surface world.

The adaptation will closely follow the story of the beautifully animated series. Althoug🌸h it only contꦆained one season, the live-action should include a second that will take place at the start of the time-skip.

6 ꦗ Ghost Stories (American Dub)ꩵ

Ghost-Stories four characters in a row

Original Format / Release

TV Limited Series, 2005

Desired Adaptation Format

Film

The original Japanese dub of Ghost Stories focused on five kids facing many well-known Japanese spirits. Although the English dub follows the original premise, its script was changed into a comedy that did not take itself seriously,ꦇ with characters swearing and straying from most of the original dialogue.

The film should follow the English dub's tone while embracing Japanese folk-lore roots. The horror comedy would be an absurd paranormal adventure which could be compared to a cross between Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark and Ghost Busters.

5 Samurai 💮Champloo

Samurai Champloo three people with backs to camera

Original Format / Release

TV Limited Series, 2004

Desired Adaptation Format

TV Limited Series

Style is one word to describe Samurai Champloo. The show is a beautiful mash-up of Edo-Japanese culture and Hip-Hop, which works through its unorthodox trio of characters forced to journey together in order to finﷺd the sunflower samurai.

The adaptation should stay as a limited series as it serves as an episodic formulaไ that loosely ties each episode together. The series should also keep the original soundtrack of the late Nujabes.

4 🔯 Junji Ito Collection (Tomie)

TV Anthology

Junji Ito’s stori𝐆es have terrified people for years, but which would m🦩ake the best horror games?

In the past, there have been many movies based on Tomie, so it would be a better fit to have an anthology series that paints Tomie in an anti-hero role. As Junji Ito's Collection is an anthology series, Tomie's stand-alone series will have each episode loosely connected and take place at any time after her murder. At the end of the day, it's a spirit who seeks revenge based on the idea of a man's unhealthy desire and lust for women.

3 💮 Demon Slayer (Blade of Demon Destruction)

Demon slayer main protagonists embracing

TV Series, 2019

Desired Adaptation Format

TV / Multi-season

In Demon Slayer, a boy and his family are attacked by demons. In the aftermath, he clings on to his life with him and his sister being the only survivors, but𝕴 due to the attack, she is also turned into a demon. He now vows to spend his life curing his sister, while becoming a defender against the supernatural.

The show would fit a multi-season format as we journey deep into the world of bꦺecoming a demon slayer, with each new season focusing on gaining abilities and learning more about the rest of the Hashira.

2 Akira

akira on a motorbike

Original Format / Release

Film 1988

Desired Adaptation Format

TV Limited Series

30 years prior to when Akira takes place, a nuke was set in the heart of a massive city. Now in 2019, Tokyo is a futuristic city that is rampant with gangs, drugs, and a corrupt government. Kaneda, a biker gang leader, is forced into unraveling the military's science experiment in order to save his friend, Testuo.

While a live-action movie is in the works, with director Taika Waititi at the helm, it doesn't have a date for when it will be released as production has not begun. A limited series would capture many of the key points of the story, even including many elements from the manga as it fleshed out many of the characters, such as the relationship between Testuo and Kaori.

1 Berserk

Beserk man with sword covered in blood

Original Format / Release

TV Limited Series,1997

Desired Adaptation Format

TV / Multi-season

🔯In Berserk, a lone warrior battles the night as he hunts the demons who haunt him. Although he suffers indefinitely, he clings to reuniting with an old ally who betrayed him and is the cause of his constant state of torture.

The series could follow most of the 1997 anime, while adding elements from the manga, such as the inclusion of Puck the Fairy and Skull Knight, who are integral to the story. The anime finished at the golden age arc, but the adaptation can expand further and hopefully finish the story that the gre༺at late ꦫMiura left behind.
