US Representative Alexandria Oc൲asio-Cortez has drafted an amendment to a bill that would prevent the US military from using Twi෴tch to recruit.
It's been a rough month for the US military on Twitch. First, there was the infamous "" tweet that resulted in a massive backlash from Twitter users. It got so bad that there was even an impromptu speedrun competition for wh𒈔o could get banned from the US Army Esports D😼iscord channel the fastest.
And then came the equally infamous 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:fake controller giveaway. Instead of taking Twitch viewers to a page where they could fill out a form to get a free Xbox Elite 2 Controller, they were instead t൲aken to a recruitment page for the US Army.
That was a violation of Twitch's terms of service, so the US Army took the link down. Now they've reportedly also ceased all operations on their Twitch channel in an attempt to lay loౠw and let the scandal blow over.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, House Representative from New York's 14th District, is not having any of it. She's drafted an amendment to the House Appropriations Bill that would prevent the US military from using funds in said bill to “maintain a presence on Twitch.🔜com or any video game, e-sports, or live-streaming platform.”
The House Appropriations bill is a funding bill that plays a large part in setting the Peꦿntagon’s budget. Preventing the Pentagon from using funds for gaming would e🀅ffectively shut down US Army Esports for good.
“It’s incredibly irresponsible for the Army and the Navy to be recruiting impressionable young people and children via live streaming platforms," AOC told . "War is not a game, and the Marine Corps’ decision not to engage in this recruiti🧜ng tool should be a clear signal to the other branches of the military to cease this practice e💜ntirely.”
That said, even if this amendment is approved and ratified in the House, it’s unlikely to see any traction in the notoriously pro-military Senate. Twitch has been an extremely useful tool for the US military’s recruitment, and it’s almost certain that the senate would vote down any attempt to limit the military’s presenc❀e o🍨n the streaming platform.
