New details have leaked about Apple&rsqu💎o;s plans for an AR/VR headset and mixed reality ecosystem, and I hate it. The plan seems to be for the headset to be called Reality Pro, and it will use internal and external cameras to track hand and eye movements. You’ll be able to interact with AR objects projected into real spaces, and allow for AR FaceTime calls. The idea is to turn its iOS experience into an augmented one, and, agaiꩵn, I hate it.

According to , Apple is planning to unveil the Reality Pro at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference on June 5. Some sources disagree and say it’s been delayed, but either way, it will be the newest major product Apple has released since the Apple Watch in 2015. I’m in favour of Apple continuingღ to innovate and create new products, but an AR headset is the wrong direction, especially at this premium price point.

Virtual reality hasn’t taken off as much as some hoped. Allegedly, the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:PS VR2 headset is close to failing, largely because of its high price point – Bloomberg reported that if Sony didn’t cut its price, it was likely to end up in a “complete disaste🦄r”. This is also partly because the games for the system are mediocre and middling in number, but in general, virtual reality simply hasn’t been that widely adopted.

It’s a possibility that Apple entering the VR space will cause an increase in popularity for the technology, but certainly not at this price point. For a staggering $3,000, early adopters of an Apple VR/AR ecosystem will be able to do more or less what their phone does, except they have tওo wear a bulky headset and fiddle with imaginary objects with their hands. It’s the dorkiest thing I can imagine. I’m no Luddite, but this doesn’t🌞 feel like a consumer product as it’s being described right now - it feels like a collector’s item.

That said, everything we know about this headset is rumour right now. I don’t think the price point seems unrealistic for Apple, but it’s not going to be a🅘ble to compete with cheaper headsets like the Meta Quest 2, which is less than an eighth the reported price of the Reality Pro. I suspect that the Reality Pro is expected to sell badly, but that it will encourage developers to start creating apps for its virtual reality ecosystem. That way, when they release a next-gen version, or even the rumoured Apple Glasses, there will be enough apps to make sure it isn’t dead on arrival.

I’m not the only one with doubts about the headset – the reported on how current and former employees are skeptical of the new product, calling it a “solution in search of a problem”. It’s more of a hop onto the bandwagonꦚ and less of a leap forward for technology, it seems. Apple’s entering the virtual reality market is great for the market. But for Apple? Not so much. Those headsets will not be flying off the shelves, just taking up space in bulky $3,000 boxes.
