The Origin Of The Titans
To understand the ending, you need to understand how the Titans came to be, and who gave them their power. It all started 2000 years ago, when a child called Ymir escaped her enslavers, fell into a mystical cave and became the first titan.
Instead of killing her captors, Ymir served them as their colossal weapon, since the thing she yearned for most was to connect with others. Fritz, leader of the slavers, used her to build his empire, and made her his concubine, although 🌟Ymir was nothing more tha🐓n a slave to him.
When talking about the Titans here, we’re referrꦓing to the ones that have special powers and maintain control.
The other type of titan i𝓡ไs an artificial, modern invention.
Ymir eventually died protecting Fritz, and her soul went to a realm known as The Path. Here, she continued to serve Fritz and his lineage, making Titan bodies whenever they invoked her power, and answe🗹r𒀰ing the wishes of his direct bloodline.
Events That Led To The Rumbling
Nearly 2000 years after Ymir’s death, one of her descendants, Karl Fritz, founded a city on Paradis Island. There, he used the founding powers (his connection to Ymir) to create a massive number of colossal Titans, and used them as foundatౠions for the city’s wall♍s.
He threatened the rest of the world with releasing said Titans if his island was ever threatened, claiming that they would flatten anything on their path. This was known as the Rumbling, and was enough of a deterrꦯent to keep the island isolated for nearly a hundred year🧸s.
Eren was able to claim the founders' powers thanks to Zeke, a direct descendant of Fritz, who showed him the Path and Ymir’s soul working nonstop. While Zeke commanded Ymir to euthanize all Eldians, Eren convinced her to aid him in unleashing the Rumbling.
Eren’s Wish
Eren wanted his people to live in peace, without having to fear the outside world. The Rumbling as a deterrent wasn’t working anymore, so he decided to use the Titans on the walls for their intended purpose: flatten the earth, killing all living things outside Paridis island.
Eren knew he’d be stopped by his friends, since he saw it in a vision when touching Historia. There, he saw his past and future😼 all tangled up together, and knew that the only positive future for his friends was if he unleashed the Rumbling.
This means that Eren knew everything that would happen if he unleashed the Rumbling, from the number of people that would be killed to the Titan powers disappearing. He also knew that his friends would live long lives, which was all that mattered to him.
Ymir’s Wish
Ymir was a tormented soul, with very little agency of her own. Even before her death, no one ever asked what she wanted to do, and she remained a slave to the Fritz bloodline without questioning anything.
Once Eren asks for her help, Ymir considers herself for the first time, and in an act of wrath, allows Eren to unleash the Rumbling. Her anger was directed at everyone and at no one; she was throwing a childish tantrum with godlike powers.
Ymir’s illogical devotion to Fritz is mirrored by Mikasa and her love for Eren. While everyone has accepted that they have to kill Eren, Mikasa can’t accept this until the last second, when she understan🐬ds that there’s no going back for him, and deliv🌳ers the final blow.
When Ymir saw that Mikasa, someone with a similar unreal devotion to a man, was able to kill the one she loved, she felt a wave of relief. She was finally able to let go of her love for Fritz, and disappeared into the ether, taking the Titan powღers❀ with her.
