Whether you're a CRPG veteran or not, there will be things that Baldur's Gate 3 does that you'll likely be unfamiliar with - we've compiled some great tips to make your first few hours with the game go a little bit more smoothly.

Know Your Ability Scores
One of the most important aspects of a character, apart from race and class, is their spread of Ability Scores. Every character and creature in the game has them - here's what they mean:

Strength |
Strength is responsible forᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚ melee weapon damage and skills such as🅰 Athletics. It also dictates your carrying capacity. |

Dexterity |
Dexterity is responsible for the damage you deal with ranged weapons and finesse weapons if you have the relevant traits. It's also responsible for your Armor Class and skills such as Stealth. |

C🐼onstitution dictates your total health, as well as your Fortitude - used for calcu🥂lating your chance to resist effects such as poison. |

Intelligence |
Intelligence is a mental stat used by some spellcasters, most notably wizards and arcane trickster rogues. It's also useful for some Knowledge skills. |

Wisdom is a mental stat used by some spellcasters, most notably clerics and druids. It's also responsible for your Perception checks, so it's important for everyone. |

Charisma |
Charisma is a mental stat used by some spellcasters, most notable sorcerers, bards, and warlocks. It's also used for skills used in conversation, like Persuasion and Intimidation. |
A good way to gauge a character's ability scores is to remember that the average score of a humanoid in any of thes❀e scores is 10, while a score of 20 represents someone truly superhuman.
Your Ability Scores provide you bonuses whenever they are used, whether in or out of combat. These are your Ability Score Bonuses, and are tied to even-numbered break points. For example, with a Strength of 20, you'll get a +5 bonus when using Strength-related actions, but a score of 19 or 18 will only get you a +4 bonus.
For this reason, it's usually only worth boosting your Ability Scores (for example, during certain level-ups) when you'd be able to reach a higher even number.
Don't Hesitate To Camp
Despite how much emphasis is put on how much danger you might be in thanks to the Illithid worms inside your heads, there's actually no in-game timer counting down to your doom. If you had any fears that taking too many Long Rests wouౠld lead to your demise, you can put those thoughts to one side.
In fact, you should be taking Long Rests quite often. The reason for this is that the vast majority of intra-party interactions occur only when you take a Long Rest and head to a Camp zone. It seems that you'll only get one, maybe two interactions per Long Rest, too, so you'll need to use this feature lots if you want to experience all the character development that the game has to offer.
This is also advice given by Larian Studios itself - taking lots of Long Rests is apparently the key to reducing a lot of the potential bugs that may appear.
Shove Is A Bonus Action
One of the great things about Baldur's Gate 3's combat system is the integration of many standard actions to take, both inside and out of battle. One of the most notable of these is the ability to shove.
Shove is a bonus action that does exactly what it sounds like it does, but it has some fantastic applications. Firstly, it can be used defensively - 🎉shove away melee enemies to disengage without triggering an opportunity attack if you need to reposition a flimsy character.
Another great way to use shove defensively is to wake up sleeping or otherwise incapacitated characters. It'll wake them up instantly, and you can use this to reposition them even when it's not their turn - you'll see your foes use this a lot if you try to put enemies to sleep.
Finally, use shoves to exploit the game's verticality. Fall damage is a very prescient threat in Baldur's Gate 3 and if you find yourself on a tall ledge, shoving an enemy off it can deal significant damage and give you some breathing room. It's also a great way to gain a height advantage for your ranged combatants.
The success of a shove when used offensively is based on your Strength score and Athletics ro🔯lls. These tactics are best used by your ༒beefiest squadmates.
Improve Your Action Economy
Somewhat related to the previous point, a great way to get better and be more successful in combat in Baldur's Gate 3 is to understand action economy. This refers to how efficient your characters are on any given ꦑturn and how many ac꧋tions they can make before having to end their turn.
Getting the most out of your characters' turns is the key to success, really. This should becomeℱ something that affects most of your planning in and out of battle. Using character builds that grant you extra attacks or make better use of your bonus actions is a🥀 good start.
To start with, though, a good rule of thumb is to limit how often you press the End Turn button without spending all your actions and bonus actions. Keep the Shove, Dash, and Throw abilities in mind at all times, and remember that potions and poisons can be drank/applied as a bonus action! Eventually, it'll become second-nature to explore every option available to you on any given turn.
Loot Management Tips
There are quite a few different philosophies as to how you should manage your loot. Some players will swear by only picking up the most valuable items, while others will hoard every single thing they come across. Some might even have a formula for calculating an item's value to weight ratio to see if it's worth grabbing.
In Baldur's Gate 3, you have access to some very convenient Fast Travel options that can be accessed from the map menu. This means you'll practically always have easy access to a merchant - so you really can feel free to pick up everything you come across and sell them at your leisure.
You can also send items to Camp. This will place them in a storage box that's accessible whenever you head to your campsite, whether it's for a rest or just for a chat with your allies.
Learning Spells From Scrolls
In Baldur's Gate 3, wizards (and only wizards) can learn spells outside of leveling up - they do this by consuming spell scrolls. Gal🐭e, one of the char🍨acters you can recruit as a companion, is a Wizard.
To learn a spell, open the inventory and click on the wizard you want to learn the spells. Then, open the item menu of the relevant spell scroll with a right click and click Learn Spell. It'll cost an amount of gold relative to the spell's level. Once learned, you'll need to add it to your prepared spell list and have a Long Rest before you can cast it.
Spells that are of the same school as your chosen subclass will cost less gold to learn! This means it can be a good idea to avoid these spells when leveling up and instead grab them cheaply via scrolls.
Grease, Grease, Grease
One of the most useful spell effects in the entire game (and in CRPGs, generally) is to make an enemy fall over. Once tripped, characters must spend valuable time and resources gettin✅g back up, ruining their action economy and giving their opponents more time and opportunity to ruin their day.
To this end, Grease is one of the most potent spells in the game. It's a level one spell and can be learned by Wizards, but there are also Grease Bottles in the game that can be thrown by anyone to simulate the spell's effects. When an enemy walks over a puddle of Grease, they have to roll a Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone, wasting their turn.
Icy spells such as and will also make patches of slippery ground, useful for tripping enemies! They tend to be far smaller than those created by Grease, however, so they're more incidental and not useful for blocking off entire chokepoints.
Another benefit to Grease is that it creates a flammable surface. You can use it to connect sources of flames, create explosionღs, or even set up fꦑire traps in conjunction with fiery spells like Fire Bolt.
Manual Saves Rule The Day
While Baldur's Gate 3 has autosaves, you'll want to be wary about relying on them. The game is a sprawling, massive RPG and your save can end up scuppered by nasty bugs or sudden crashes - save manually, and save often.
It's also a good idea to head into the Gameplay Options menu and increase the number of Autosave and Quicksave slots you have, just to give yourself the most options for recovering after a catastrophe.
