The story of the Bhaalspawn Saga might be at an end, but it has been confirmed that characters from Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II will appear in Baldur's Gate III.
The Baldur's Gate video games use the Forgotten Realms campaign setting from Dungeons & Dragons. A lot has changed in the Forgotten Realms since the release of Throne of Bhaal, as the timeline has jumped forward over a century. Bhaal has been restored to his position as the god of murder and many new races have appeared or become commonplace in the world, such as the drago💟nborn and the tieflings.
The story of Baldur's Gate III involves a battle against mind flayers, but it will still be linked to the events of the first two games, 🦩which will include cameos from familiar characters. Larian Studios' creative director Swen Vincke discussed the returning characters and story elements in a recent AMA.
We r▨eally don’t want to spoil anything but we wouldn’t call it Baldur’s Gate 3 if there wouldn’t be a link. Let me just say that we touch upon the story of BG 1 & 2 in meaningful ways, there are returning characters and what happened in BG 1/2/tob leads to what happens into BG3. You won’t necessarily see that at the start of the adventure but you will quickly understand once you get further into the game.
The fact that Baldur's Gate III is set a century after the events of Throne of Bhaal means little in a fantasy world, as many of the characters from the first two games belong to long-lived races. There were party members in Baldur's Gate who were dwarves, drow, elves, half-elves, and gnomes, all of which can easily live for a few centuries. There are also magical ways for an individual to remain in the story, such a✃s becoming an undead. It has also been confirmed that Minsc is still alive, as he was petrified in the pasﷺt and returned to flesh in the present day.
It remains to be seen how the story of the three Baldur's Gate games will link together. The Bhaalspawn Saga has long since concluded and Bhaal was restored to his original position, regardless of the actions of the player. The trailers that have been released of Baldur's Gate III so fa🐭r have shown dark deeds happening within the city of Baldur's Gate, but we'll have to wait to see if it's due to the actions of Bhaal or one of the other enemies the player made in the original game.
Baldur's Gate III is currently in development for Googl🐭e Stadia and PC.
