Space submarine survival sim Barotrauma recently had its largest and most extensive update so far applied, titled the New Front🐲iers Update. New Frontiers primarily incluꦺdes a complete campaign overhaul to improve player progression and lay a more solid foundation in place for future updates. A whole slew of new content was also added, including explorable outposts, a new starter sub, AI improvements, scripted events, and more.
Singleplayer and multiplayer progression received the most attentౠion with the New Frontiers update, with each mode getting a bevy of enhancements to make them play uniquely from each other through crew AI changes and upgrades, and getting them to feel more like they should. The campaign ove🌌rhaul was coupled with a visual overhaul that improved sprites, sub graphics, and the campaign map.
A preview post that covers all the details was published on the Barotrauma website prior to the update being applied. The post explains the campaign progression focus in this update isn’t the end of that task, but rather more like a phase one of an ongoing mission. Campaign development will continue throughout the ✃game's Early Access period, and will hopefully give their player base a better idea of what campaign developments to expect in the future.
One of the greatest New Frontiers updates comes by way of explorable outposts. Outposts will replace the previous campaign menu which allowed you to hire crewmembers, buy services, and trade. With Outposts, you can now take your character to explore them and encounter AI characters to conduct those above activities with, as well as experience random scripted events and discover deep Barotrauma lore.
The subs themselves have also been much improved, from the starter sub you now begin witꦛh in a new campaig♈n, to the many sub upgrades you’re now able to make. Multiple new subs have been added that you can buy once you can afford to, and those are also upgradable. And of course, all these improvements also apply to your custom-made subs.
Improvements were also made to the in-game economy (marks have replaced credits), crewmate and bot AI has been smoothed out (though still a WIP), along with the difficulty levels. After all this, according to the update post, most of the Barotrauma team will be taking much of August off to rest and refresh, but already have the next u🤪pdate planned for when they return to work.
