We went to Tennocon 20🐎25, the annual Warframe convention, and while the upcoming The Old Peace update was announced, we can still feel the ripples of the 1999 chapter from last year, and how important a story it was for all the Tenno around the world.

To talk a bit more about the characters in that chapter and the process behind bringing them to life, we sat down with voice actors Amelia Tyler (Eleanor), Alpha Takahashi (Aoi), Elsie Lovelock (Neci), Kevin Afghani (Amir), and Trieve Blackwo✨od-Cambridge (Quincy) to discuss the past and present of theirꦛ characters.

From left to right: Elsie Lovelock, Kevin Afghani, Alpha Takahashi, Santi Leguiza, Trieve Blackwood-Cambridge, and Amelia Tyler.

TheGamer: Warframe: 1999 released last year, and even though the story of the Hex and their adventures remains in the past, their in-game present is still evolving through more content introduced in Techrot Encore and Isleweaver updates, and the extensive K.I.M. dating system. How was the process of bringing those characters to life?

Kevin Afghani: Amir is very 1-to-1 on who I am 💟as a person, so it was pretty easy to get in character. Unbeknownst to them [writers Kat Kingsley and Adrian Bott], they wrote me pretty accurately, so I just got in front of a mic and went on, so my process wasn't too in-depth.

Thou🤪gh the deeper parts of the mirror were more of a process, learning what the character is𓆉 and how he would react to all of the things around him, as the apocalyptic scenario definitely affects a guy like him.

Trieve Blackwood-Cambridge: My process was a concoction of different things; when I first got to audition for him, I knew where I wanted to place him right away, because there are a few people in my life who are very similar to this character. Music is also a big thing for me; a lot of Grime and UK Rap influenced this character, and I would listen to that on the way to the studio to get me in that heads𓆉pace.

I think it helps massively to get the energy of who that guy is, because he has a very specific London energy to him. There were also moments where I could pour 🤪a little bit of myself, as he has a cheeky side, so yeah, 🔜I was pulling from a few different places to make him.

Alpha Takahashi: I had a process and progression in having a relationship with Aoi; when I first auditioned, I didn't know who I was portraying, but along the way of learning who she was, I got closer. I also think the team has written 𝓀her similarly to who I am, so Aoi sort of sounds close to what I’d sound like, and it was lovely to see that happen.

As far as getting ready, I was listening to music as well; before going in the booth every session, my engineer would play me music from the soundtrack, and Matt [Chalmers, Warframe’s Composer] came♎ out with the first On-Lyne song. Then, during the Fall, Koumei’s theme📖 song released, so he would also play that, and it helped me get mentally prepared for the right tone for the character.

Elsie Lovelock: I'm gonna🀅 get a bit of a boring answer, really, but I don't have a process of getting into character. Without sounding like a d***head, I do so many different characters and voices that it's more of a vocal thing for me.𓆉 Because she's so low, I just had to make sure my voice was low because sometimes it just wasn't going low enough.

She's so rageful, and I'm also full of rage, so it's very fun to get that out; I love voicing very unhinged, angry characters, ❀s🎶o that's why she's perfect for me.

Amelia Tyler: For me𝕴, Eleanor is very similar to me; there's a lot of shared background there, so once we had decided what she was gonna be like and I could lean into my own personality, that side of things was kind of seamless. What I did do at the very beginning, just to find the tone that we were gonna set, was to find some commonality there with Arthur.

They had to sound like siblings without me doing a Ben [Starr, voice actor for Arthur Nightingale] impression, so we had to figure out what was similar🅺 and different, what their relationship would be like, and how they wou🍃ld talk to each other. So I listened to a little bit of what he'd already recorded, and I was like, “ok, I'm gonna take that little element of what he does at the end of a sentence, I'm gonna keep that in”, but all the rest of it is different.

Each one of you portrays a character with a very distinctive personal background, which you can explore as a player through the dating system introduced in the 1999 update. What’s your favorite part of your characters’ journeys?

Lovelock: They really cooked with the designs in this ga𒀰me; every single character they produce just looks so fire.

Tyler: Oh yeah, they’re all so hot.

Afghani: Unattainably hot!

(Everyone laughs.)

Takahashi: Oh, the love, the loꦇve that Aoi has for all of her family, the Hex team. She's so protective and loving, and she just wants everyone to stay together and work together, which is something I loo💎k up to.

Afghani: I'll go at it from a gameplay point of view; I really love the speed boos🦹t, and you know, it is part of his character. You see him flying all over the place so fast that he can play multiple games at the same time, and running with everybody as they're ridiඣng their motorcycles.

Tyler: It's like watchin𝐆g one of those videos you get of somebody with a dog that's got way too much energy, and they're just in a car with the lead 🍸with this guy.

Afghani: He's so animated, and that aspect of him just brings all of the ADHD energy to the sur🌠face.

Takahashi: Oh, that's my favorite be🐷cause when you th𒉰ink of an ADHD impression, you immediately think about speaking fast, and what you’re doing is not that; it’s way more of a natural portrayal.

Afghani: Yeah, I'm just🌱 taking something that I've dealt with… how old am I? It really is not an impression (laughs). I'm speaking how I speak in that game in real life all the time!

Blackwood-Cambridge: Quincy is incredibly fearless, and I loveꩵ that; he doesn't apologize for the space he takes up. It's nice to breathe life into someone who just owns who the🍨y are, what they say, and what they do, which is refreshing.

Tyler: I love the duality that Eleanor has; there is this side of her that is monstrous, and sh🔯e's trying to find how much it's worth letting that side win, what she's willing to sacrifice. There are parts of that monstrousness that she enjoys, and she's figuring out whether that makes her a bad person.

But underneath it all, there is somebody incredibly maternal and protective, who goes out into the children's dreams at night ꦛand makes their nightmares go away. And you never get to see that element of her unless you're dating her, when she shows you that vulnerability. I think it's cool to see a female character with that kind of potential for monstrousness, where there is softness there as well.

Lovelock: I won't spoil anything, but we recently got to go underneath her a bit more, which I liked. I've heard the expression ‘anger is the bodyguard of sadness’, 🥀which I feel speaks to Neci. She is really mult𒈔i-layered, and I like going to explore more of that.

A collage of the six members of the Hex in Warframe.

The Hex members are people with different personalities and backgrounds, which makes them clash sometimes, but at the end of the day, they all decide to stay with each other. What do you think brings them together as a group?

Takahashi: Me!

(Everyone laughs.)

Tyler:𝄹 Well, yeah! In Ele❀anor's case, she literally stays because Aoi comes out the night when she was gonna leave and convinces her to stay!

Afghani: I think that each part of the hex is like an important pillar of their group, and without one of those pillars, I think the whole thing comes down, whether they like to adm🧔it it or not; I mean, I think that you remove Aoi and Amir…

Tyler: …And that's a very dark group! (laughs)

Afghani: And if you remove Quincy and Arthur, and all of a sudden, well, now they're getting nothing accomplished and they have no direction and no drive. You remove any of these pieces, and the whole group falls apart, so I think that's why🌳 they're drawn together; they found a family through 🔴this horrific situation.

Elsie, your character, Major Neci Rusalka, isn't part of The Hex, and outside of the 1999 main story, we only learn more about her through the stories her adoptive parents tell us. What kind of person do you think we'll find when we finally meet her real self?

Lovelock: I'll be honest with you, I don't have a clue, but I'm very excited if that time ever does come because I think there's nothing more fun than exploring under the layer of a villain. She's got that aspect where it's not entirely her; she’s The Man In The 🧔Wall as well, so I'm really looking forward to finding out what that could be.

Afghani: We could adopt her!

Tyler: Yeah, actually, w♐e've been talking about it, about ho🌠w Eleanor has been inside her head and seen that she's being controlled, so she would want to help.

Lovelock: The🏅re's that potential for 🅺her to be rehabilitated!

Afghani: We're just playing pretend, by the way.

(Everyone laughs.)

Lovelock: There’s so much depth in exploring that path to redemption, you know, a lot of people🌳 will reject a friendship group or not see how good other people can be for them, and there's so much depth and potential to it.

This year, we find ourselves at Tennocon, where all the players come to celebrate Warframe and learn more about the future of the game they love. How do you think the game’s community has received you, and have you had any interaction with fans that has stayed with you?

Tyler: They've just been incredibly supportive!

Lovelock: Yeah, amazing, fans and an amazing group of people. It's just i𒐪t's always nice to be in something that's well-received, and I think Warframe has such a supportive community around it in general, where it's just lovely to be part of that.

Takahashi: With the K.I.M. relationship system, each person got closer to a character, and I love seeing that. I♔t's really lovely for us to see that as voice ac⛦tors, to see the community continuously interacting with them.

Tyler: I think a lot of people started dating Eleanor because of the ♔infested tongue cutscene as a joke (laughs), but it makes my day when they come out and mention subtle details about her.

Blackwood-Cambridge: Yeah, there's been a lot of support and positive reactions online, which is lovely, but it's when you kind of have those conversations in real life that you remember how muꦛch people form a relationship with these characters. It's humbling, and I'm so proud to be part of that kind of process.

Afghani: It's incredible to know that you've affected someone, and the idea that you have impacted their life inꦜ any way.

Blackwood-Cambridge: The work, when we record it, is so kind of isolated, so we d🐠on't even get to interact with each other, and you're doing your best, but you don't know how it's gonna connect. Then you come out and you engage with people who form a relationship with your character, and it's like, “Wow, you did something right”. It's a beautif🐠ul thing to establish those relationships.
