Players have come to expect certain staples from JRPGs, including different types of weapons, elements, attacks, recruitable party members, environments, and more. One staple often seen in JRPGs is allies that aren't human.
These specific allies aren't necessarily a party character themselves but usually come as an extension of a character who has joined the party, whether they be a pet, mysterious creature, or something else entirely. But not all allies are created equal, and some are more useless or more annoying than others, so which of these allies are the best for party members to have by their side?
9 Shady Thousand - Wiꦛld Arms 3 ꦰ
In Wild Arms 3, party member Maya Schroedinger has a feline ally named Shady Thousand. As one might be able to tell from Maya's last name, Shady is based on Schroedinger's cat, but the similarities go beyond just her last name. Shady was originally put in a box by Maya's father to conduct experiments on him, quite literally making him Schroedinger's cat. Maya eventually freed him, and he has been a valuable ally to her ever since. Shady Thousand may not have the most extensive backstory compared to other characters, but how many other JRPG characters are directly based on a quantum mechanics thought experiment?
8 Vyrn - Granblue Fantasy 🎐
Vyrn seems like the typical cute JRPG mascot character, but there's a lot more to him than meets the eye. It's unknown what exactly Vyrn is or where he comes from (don't call him a lizard), but it has been heavily hinted that he's related to Bahamut. He has also been with the player character since their childhood. Due to the nature of his relationship with the player character, he will do anything to help them, even if it means sacrificing his own life. Vyrn might not be the strongest ally to have around, but he is a noble friend to those he cares about.
7 Lofty - Ni N🎃o Kuni II

Plenty of allies in JRPGs have powers or have an alternate, more powerful form, but the engineered life form Cupil from Skies of Arcadia can take the form of several different weapons. When in battle, Cupil can transform into a blade, cone, sword, star, cutlass, spear, claymore, cannon, club, lance, spike, hammer, Pan, Weight, or a giant version of himself, but outside of battle prefers to take the form of a bracelet on party member Fina's wrist. Cupil gains these different forms by eating Chams, which are moonstones so tiny that they're nearly invisible to the human eye. Cupil may be different than the allies featured in other JRPGs, but his abilities and appearance help make him one of the best and most unique of the bunch.
