If you've never played Dungeons and Dragons before, the alignment system allows you to determine a character's general moral leanings and habits through one of nine classifications. One of these classifications is Chaotic Good, and it generally refers to someone whose actions reflect a desire to aid others and protect things, but on their own terms rather than terms set forth by a governing body (i.e. laws).

Chaotic Good protagonists are good guys, generally, it's just that their definition of "justice" doesn't always jibe with that of society at large. There are plenty of Chaotic Good protagonists in games, but here are the ones that really exemplify the idea.

10 ♔ ⛎ Max - Sam and Max

Max pointing at the player in Sam and Max: This Time it's Virtual

Max is, for lack of a better word, a hedonist. He likes snacks, he likes TV, and he likes hurting people. 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Sam and Max don't work as Freelance Police because they particularly care about justice, but just because it gives them a more-or-less free pass to do 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:whatever they want. As long as the crooks they battle are sufficiently evil and weird, the Commissioner is content to let the two of them have free rein since their shenanigans still have a net positive for society. The only reason Max isn't higher on this list is that we've never seen him do anything especially awful to anyone, though based on some of his chats with Sam, he has definitely tried on more than one occasion.

9 Sly 💫C🍰ooper - Sly Cooper Series

Sly Cooper smirking in Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time

As a gentleman thief, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Sly Cooper embodies one of the oldest forms of Chaotic Good. It's a credo of the Cooper line to only steal from other, worse criminals, mostly because stealing from normal people isn't particularly fun or interesting. Sly and his gang like to angle their heists so that they can make off with a hefty prize while simultaneously leaving their marks dazed long enough for the cops to mop them up. As Sly has explained in discussions with Carmelita, they both work toward the same general purpose, just from opposite ends of the law, and with 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:more entertaining methods in Sly's case.

8 ♚ Yoshim♛itsu - Soul Calibur

Yoshimitsu with sword drawn in Soul Calibur 6

Yoshimitsu is the head of the Manji Clan, a chivalrous organization of thieves that steal from the rich and give to the poor, Robin Hooജd-style. Their strength and resources are notorious, but they never take 🀅sides in conflicts, as they know the common folk are the ones who need their help the most.

Unfortunately, this is what got the original Manji Clan wiped out by Oda Nobunaga and sent Yoshimitsu on a quest for revenge, but after meditating on it, he realized that even that thirst for vengeance was secondary to the needs of the many. Yoshimitsu and the Manji bow to no lord or commanding body, and if either threatens the safety of the people, they're there in a flash to fight back.

7 So💙l Badguy - Guilty Gear

Sol Badguy preparing to fight in Guilty Gear Strive

Sol carries a lot of weight on his shoulders, and it tends to make him a bit standoffish. It's for this reason that he works as a bounty hunter rather than with the Holy Order. Sol is a deceptively intelligent and compassionate man, rightfully so given his history with the creation of Gears, and he has a pretty good idea of what it takes to keep the world safe from harm. The problem is that his methods don't really work with the red tape-laden requirements of the Holy Order and the world's various governments, so he's forced to skirt the rules and take matters into his own hands to prevent further tragedies. It's rather telling that it took a potentially world-ending cataclysm for him to finally cooperate with the Illyrian government.

6 Yuri Lowell - Tales of Vesp♐eria 𝓡

Yuri holding his sword in Tales of Vesperia

On the surface, Yuri seems like your typical anime protagonist swordsman. He's very direct and somewhat rude, but also generally friendly and good-natured. However, as someone who has lived at the bottom of a caste system, Yuri knows what it's like to go hungry and to see those he cares about suffer needlessly at the hands of the privileged. This is why, when given the opportunity to forcefully remove corrupt officials from their power (and their lives), he doesn't hesitate. He knows when the system is stacked against him and has no qualms about circumventing it. If he didn't, odds are good they'd get away with just a slap on the wrist.

5 Preside🥃nt Michael Wilson - Metal Wolf Chaos

Michael Wilson giving a speech in Metal Wolf Chaos

You would think, being the President of the United States, Michael Wilson would be textbook Lawful Good. Perhaps he was when his administration was in charge, but when America is taken over in a coup d'etat, he immediately hops into the heavily armored mech, Metal Wolf, and begins dismantling their entire structure by force. One of Michael's catchphrases is "believe in your own justice," meaning that even if the system changes hands and he's no longer officially in the right, he knows the difference between good and evil — even if he himself is vilified for his actions.

4 Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad - Assassin's Creed

Altair in a crowd in Assassin's Creed

The primary credo of the Assassin Order is "nothing is true, everything is permitted." Since their inception, their main goal has been to maintain balance in the world and prevent the uprising of despots and tyrants. Of course, it's the tyrants who make the rules, so this still places them firmly in the realm of chaos. Altaïr became a paragon of the Order's tenets, quietly dismantling overwhelming power structures with a quick, quiet stab. In the eyes of the public, he would no doubt be anything but a murderer. But if that's all they think, then that means he's done his job properly.

3 Travis To𝓰uchdown - No More Heroes

Travis Touchdown is not a good person, and he has no illusions about that. He has admitted on multiple occasions that he 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:genuinely enjoys killing people, especially other assassins like himself. His entire motivation for the first game was just to get in bed with Sylvia. However, as the series went on, Travis began to develop something akin to a set of principles, seeking to dismantle the entire UAA in the second game because he was tired of them pitting assassins against one another. As he explained, assassins are still people, twisted though they may be. They don't deserve to be made to butcher each other just for the public's cheap amusement.

2 ♕ ൩ Nero - Devil May Cry 4

Nero posing in Devil May Cry 4

Despite being raised as a knight of the Order of the Sword, Nero has never been especially on board with authority figures. Granted, that may be partially on them, as his demonic arm didn't exactly endear him to his peers.

Regardless, brash as he may be, he does still care about protecting people from demons, even if those demons end up coming from within the Order itself. If it's to save his girlfriend Kyrie (and the world as well, if he can be bothered), he'll tear through the lot of them.

1 The Doo❀m Slayer - Doom ꦯ

The Doom Slayer battling demons in Doom Eternal

The Slayer has a bit of a complicated relationship with humankind. On the one hand, he immediately murders all demons he sees on sight, which is generally in our interest. On the other hand, though, he's not doing it out of a desire to protect humanity from Hell. He just really, really, really hates demons, and if a human summons those demons, he 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:won't be gentle with them either. His very first interaction with Samuel Hayden through a monitor says it all: Hayden attempted to justify the use of Hell's Argent energy as a power source, and the Slayer silently smashed the monitor. Demons and demon collaborators will be destroyed, no exceptions.
