Being sick as an adult just doesn't hit the same as it did when we were kids. Instead of getting tucked in and watching day time TV we have to email our bosses and gather the strength to cook something. What hasn't changed is the desire to laze about and play video games or watch movies while bundled up in bed or on the sofa, and the gamers have been sharing their favourite sick games.

Dhruvenator started the thread by asking, "what games do you all play when you're sick?" Some people take advantage of the time to tuck into the latest blockbuster, like dmaul1114 who's been playing God of War Ragnarok.

Others suggest games that are far less intense and require less focus. JustinH suggested something "low impact," which for them at the moment is Pentiment. They say "it's a game I can just be fascinated by and enjoy. I imagine that might be good for someone who is sick."

DougieFlesh takes a more pragmatic approach and prefers to play "something that leans real heavy into gameplay so that I can turn it off at a moments notice." Depending on what kind of illness you've got, you may need to run to the loo suddenly, in which case being in the middle of a Warzone round isn't good. Something with a pause button is mandatory, so that's Dark Souls out of the question.

Sometimes, you're just too sick to play anything. A lot of the people responding to Dhruvenator said they just watch TV or YouTube. Giant Bomb and Beastcast episodes were mentioned, and just watching 12 straight hours of YouTube videos. Let's Plays allow you to enjoy a game without needing to put too much thought into it🌱, so you can sit th▨ere in a sickly daze and be taken on a journey.

Short games are a good shout too, as they can help you feel like you've accomplished something while half awake. Rosebud played through all of Papers Please while they had the flu. Like the characters in the game, their coughing got so bad they needed to be checked on.

It can also be a bad idea to play games while sick, as sometimes you start to associate the game with feeling crappy. ZeoVGM played Star Fox 64 when they were ill as a child, so they ended up not returning to it for a while. Funny how our brains make those connections. I'll always associate Pokemon Sapphire with my neighbour who stole my Ruby cartridge. Yes I was one of those kids who got both games so I could trade with myself.

It seems that the best games to play when you're sick are the ones that bring you comfort. If that's Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley, good for you. If you prefer to inflict pain on hellspawn in Doom to forget about your own splitting headache, that's great too. Just try not to throw up on your controller, it's hard to get the smell out.
