There are numerous classics to point to as prime examples that we’ve been blessed with over the years and there’s always something new just lurking around the corner. Whether that’s a brand new IP or a remaster or remake of a cult classic that has been given some next-gen TLC. There’s something to suit everyone's particular horror tastes, so if you’re looking for the next big scare then here are some of the best third-person survival horror games out now.

10 ✨ Dead Space 2023

A faithful remaster that further expanded the game, the 2023 Dead Space remake was a critical hit and arguably reignited the lost love for a franchise that got done dirty over the years and was left to rot. A colossal planet-cracker that’s become filled with a now necrotic and mutated crew controlled by a fell alien intellect. The Resident Evil series has a few fan favorites within it and by far the most popular was Resident Evil 4. Given plenty 🌺of remasters and ports over the years, after the remakes of the first three games proved to be popular, a remaster of the iconic fourth game was inevitable.

Leon Kennedy’s horrible Spanish holiday has been given a next-gen♐ uplift that massively improved on the original. There are all the old favorites as well as some big changes for certain characters, boss fights, and a brand new shooting gallery mini-game for the Merchant. Ada’s stand-alone campaign was also released as separate DLC with a much more fleshed-out story than before.

The Resident Evil 4 Remake not only has tighter stylish combat, but it’s also much more self-aware tﷺhan its predecessor and reall🌊y leans into the wackier side of its proto-Devil May Cry origins.

8 🍃 Silent Hill 2 🥀

Silent Hill has🌜 become quite t🏅he troubled and mismanaged series over the years, but despite wallowing in the Konami mire now it used to be one of the top dogs of third-person horror games. The most iconic of which was Silent Hill 2, which was arguably the series at its best.

So what better way to revisit a classic than by taking Bloober Team's best attempt at a remaster out for a spin. Step back into the shoes of James Sunderland as he slinks around the mist-filled streets of Silent Hill looking for his wife Mary. Unearth the horrible mystery at the heart of this blighted burgh and plumb the depths of human grief, guilt, and punishment with this Konami classic.

Konami's remake of Silent Hill 2 oddly chooses to come with the origin story of Pyramid Head. Even though he appears in Silent Hill 2 as a manifestation of James’s guilt and because he saw a Civil War Executioner painting and got spooked by it.

7 ♛Callisto Protocol

If you want something close to Dead Space🐓, done by the original team but much more cinematic then you can’t go wrong with Callisto Protocol. Despite a few flaws here and there, the overall experience of stomping through the crumbling Black Iron Prison on Callisto is a pretty positive one.

You find yourself in the prison-issue boots of Jacob Lee, played by Josh Duhamel, as he tries to escape a facility in chaos. Mutants are running amok, the Security Droids are crushing inmates' heads and it’s overall a really bad time for our new buddy Jacob. What follows is a gore-filled whirlwind tour of the blasted surface of the planet and the ruined secret sections of the station as Jacob tries to get home.

Unfortunately, a lot of the challenge in Callisto Protocol is broken easily over your leg when you realize th🍃e melee combat is like Punch-Out and can be solved by using the same combo sequence over and over again.

6 The Last Of Us ♕

It wouldn’t be a list filled with the best third-person horror games without a mention of Th💖e Last Of Us. At the time it was a groundbreaking blend of exciting gameplay, heart-wrenching cinematic scenes, and tight combat mechanics that earned its place in the gaming Hall of Fame.

It’s had a few remasters and ports ꧑already and another coming for next-gen but it’s always worth revisiting the story of Joel and Ellie in a zombie-filled USA. Experience what people will push themselves to do in order to survive, fight hordes of infected that are strengthened by horrifically mutated individuals, and hold back those tears when you get to the finale. Plus, if you don’t have time for the game, there’s always the TV show as it’s surprisingly accurate to the game.

5 ▨ A Plague Tale: Requiem

The sequel to A Plague Tale: Innocence, Requiem picks things up six months after the first game as we follow the siblings Amicia and Hugo as they seek refuge from the chaos with a group called The Order. But things quickly go sideways from there and it's up to the tormented siblings to survive whilst trying to cure Hugo of his cursed affliction.

The story goes in some very dark directions and there are plenty of challenging stealth and survival sections that will keep you on your toes and your brain burning through solutions. There are plenty of spectacular set-piece moments featuring the series of sinister torrents of Rats, crazed cults, and blighted survivors to deal with. If you enjoyed the original then you’ll find yourself at home in t♌his fantastic follow-up.

4 Death Strandingﷺ

Despite garnering a bit of a mixed and confused reception when it launched, Death Stranding was the first big step of legendary videogame auteur Hideo Kojima outside of the Konami umbrella. Death Stranding is set in a post-apocalyptic America where a horrible global event has rendered the outside world hostile and everyone has to stay indoors whilst surviving on the equivalent of Amazon. What follows is a mind-bending tale that intertwines the afterlife, Kojima's patented plot points of everything having a deeper meaning, and some genuinely stylish design choices in its world-building. With a bunch of ports to a range of platforms including mobile, and a sequel just around the corner, Death Stranding is a cultural touchstone that you’ve got to check out at least once.

Fun fact, Death Stranding's ironically prescient plot is something Kojima himself has apologized for and has promised that the sequel will be more weirder and less grounded in reality and current events.

3 Alan Wake 2 👍 𒉰

The long-awaited sequel to a series thought dead years ago, Alan Wake 2 took everything that made the original great and improved on it te🍸nfold. The oꦑnly game so far to successfully blend FMVs and videogame storytelling, Alan Wake 2 picks up after the events of the previous games as we follow our favorite cursed Author.

Still contending with the eldritch darkness that follows in his footsteps and uses his written text against him, old Alan and som💖e new characters have to contend with the evil hidden within Bright Falls. Filled with⭕ tons of references to previous games from Remedy Entertainment, Alan Wake 2 got a lot of well-earned praise for a sequel and is definitely worth checking out.

2 🤪 De🍌ad By Daylight

Though it’s filled with multiplayer mayhem and the majority of third-person survival horror games are single-player, Dead By Daylight perfectly captures the experience whilst letting you bring your friends. Filled with a cast of cult classic movie 🅰monsters and Killers, unique and cameo Survivors with the likes of Nick Cage even lending his talents, Dead By Daylight is dripping in horror vibes.

Hunt other players as one of the resident monsters in first-person, or take on the true third-person survival horror experience with one of the Survivors. Four versus oꦆne PvP is the aim of the game and if nobody works together, it’ll all be over quickly and violently. There’s always some new event, content drop, or characters added often s🐈o it’s always got something worth checking back in for.

Another Remedy Entertainment game that makes the list for a few reasons, Control arguably laid the foundation of the team's future with the series. Without going too much into spoiler territory, you play as the Director of The Bureau of Control, a secret agency in the United States that deals with the paranormal.

Think SCP Foundation but with a much bigger budget and you’ve got The Bureau. What follows is an action-packed dive ♛into the strange and bizarre as you use powerful abilities to bend reality to your wi🌌ll whilst getting to the bottom of the mystery of this secretive organization.
