The l🤪egend of the werewolf ha🍬s existed in one shape or another since the Greek myth of King Lycaon. From movies to television, our media has shown itself to be fascinated with this mythic monstrosity. Video games, of course, are no exception to this rule. This fascination makes sense; the werewolf is an expression of duality. Werewolves tend to explore the idea of the hidden monster buried just below the surface.

From Link to Sonic, there have been some tremendously notable characters moonlighting as werewolves in video games (and the protagonist can become a werewolf in such titles as The Elder Scrolls Onlin▨e). Unfortunately, they won't be included here. While some star power will be lost in their exclusion, there are notable werewolves more deserving of inclusion who bring their own unique take on this classic creature.

10 Zeppelin Woဣlf, Actraiser: Magic Meets Mangy Might

Split image Zeppelin Wolf as he appears in Actraiser and Actraiser Renaissance

Many games nail the wolf part of the werewolf, but they often fail to do anything interesting with the human side. Thꦗis is one area where Actraiser’s Zeppelin Wolf annihilates the c💫ompetition. Fighting him means fighting two distinct bosses: Zeppelin as a mage, teleporting around the room and casting spells, and Zeppelin as a werewolf, charging at the player headfirst.

While he moves rather quickly as a werewolf,♈ he doesn’t hit partꦡicularly hard. Ultimately, Zeppelin Wolf isn’t a particularly difficult fight, but he is unquestionably a memorable one.

9 ℱ Loup-Garou, Shin Megami Tensei V: A Garouvy Werewolf 🌸

Loup-Garou confronts the party in Shin Megami Tensei 5 (partially speaking French)

While the werewolf demon has been featured in the series before, it had been on a bit of a hiatus (last having been seen in 1992’s 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Shin Megami Tensei). That all ended with 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Shin Megami Tensei 5, which chose to update the character by leaning into the Loup-Garou mythology. In service of this reference, Loup-Garou is wearing a Napoleonic c✱oat, ensuring that no one will miss the de🔯sign influence.

He also sports an aristocratic air, as he speaks rather formally during negotiations (with French interspersed throughout). These design elements give Loup-Garou a sense of duality. Moreover, this werewolf is just a lot of fun. During his boss fight he absolutely chews the scenery. Be warned, though: if you don’t come prepared with some Light or Ice demon🍬s, he may chew on you as well.

8 Warwick, League of Legends: A Jungler Who Goes For The Jugular 💞

League of Legends' Warwick howls at the moon

Picture this. You are a hulking werewolf. You prowl the forest, stalking weaker creatures. When you see an unsuspecting adventurer, you pounce from a great distance (completely unseen) and maul them with your razor-sharp teeth and claws. This is the experience of a Warwick jungler in 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:League of Legends.

The name of the game is ambush, and Warwick has the tools which allow him to do just that. Playing Warwick feels very close to the ideal werewolf simulator, and there's no denying that it just makes for an exhilarating experience.

7 💛 Sabreman, Knight Lore: A Legend Among (Wolf) Men

Split image of Knight Lore's Saberman accompanied by a howling Saberwulf from Killer Instinct

Sabreman is the lead lycanthrope in the ZX Spectrum puzzle title Knight Lore. The g🦋ame features a day and night cycle. During the night, Sabreman transforms. While in his werewolf form, enemies become more aggressive, making Sabreman’s quest to craft a cure for his lycanthropy more difficult.

Interestingly, Sabreman’s lycanthropic escapades were a direct influence on the design of Killer Instinct’s Sabrewulf (a notable werewolf in his own right). This means that Sabreman’s influence is still being felt nearly four decades after his first appearance. Now that's a pedigree!

6 ༒ Brad Fang, Contra Hard Corps: The Cybernetic Canine

Split image of Brad Fang from Contra Hard Corps utilizing two of his unique weapons

Contra: Hard Corps’ Brad Fang is part of the static wolfman archetype (seemingly not having a human form), but he also belongs to a more exclusive werewolf archetype: He is a biomechanical wolfman, hence his arm cannon. Brad has a unique playstyle for a Contra game, as his hardest hitting weapon sports an in🅷credibly short range. Moreover, while his ꧅second best weapon has considerably better range, it requires a long charge (and in Contra you always want to be shooting).

This all means that you will have to play a little sharper when using Brad Fang. Ultimately, your efforts will be rewarded with a visceral, hard-hitting style of play that allows you to dish out heavy damage while maintaining an uncomfortably close range (or dodging for extended periods while charging your attack). Most importantly though, Brad is in a th✨ird, even more exclusive, group of werewolves: he wears cool shades! Just Brad and Beerwolf belong to that group.

5 ♋ Valkenhayn R. Helsingꦗ, Blazblue Series: Wipes His Paws At The Door

Blazblue Series Split image of Valkenhayn R. Hellsing in his human form bowing and prowling in his wolf form

Often the more bestial qualities of a werewolf are🦂 emphasized, but here is a character who is presented as extraordinarily cordial. Dressed in a full suit, Valkenhayn is ever so civil. He bows to certain opponents before a match, and when he wins he calmly checks his pocket watch (unsu♏rprisingly, he seems to be the punctual type).

In contrast, in his wolf form Valkenhayn is all teeth, claws, and unstoppable aggression. He hurtles around the battlefield in a whirlwind of fur and fangs. Winning in his wolf form even leaves him howling at the moon. Valkenhayn is a character who emphasizes the duality of the werewolf. He represents the division between the bestial and human qualities bea🐻utifully.

4 🎐 Zylo, Shining Force: The Wily Warwolf

Zylo from Shining Force preparing to attack

Zylo is Shining Force’s first werewolf character (many more would follow in his stead). Starting with the unique class of “Warwolf,” Zylo has high Attack and Agility stats. If he is 🧔in a forested area, his reach rivals that of a flying unit. Even outside of the woods, Zylo has💃 fantastic range (especially for a grounded biped).

Zylo shines the most when you first acquire him. He can easily carry the team during the midsection of ꦏthe game. However, his lack of a weapon does start to bite him in the end game. Still, by no means does Zylo ever become a burden. As a highly mobile unit with very respectable damage, this is one Warwolf who belongs on the squad.

3 Bob, Suikoden 2: The Turn-Based 🦩Beast

Split image of Bob from Suikoden 2 attacking Neclord and standing in formation

Initially, Suikoden 2’s Bob doesn’t stand out. He is simply a character more interested in associating with Kobolds than other humans. However, once taken into battle, the heart of Bob’s canine companionship begins to make more💟 sense. His unique rune (the Rabid Fang rune) allows him to turn into a werewolf.

In his human form, Bob is a solid mid-range fighter, but he starts to really shine as a wer🐻ewolf. He hits twice ꧟as hard and takes half as much damage. Bob can only use the Rabid Fang rune once per battle, and it does leave him weakened, but it can absolutely help you claim victory from the jaws of defeat.

2 ꦦ Jon Talbain, Darkstalkers: Enter The Werewolf

A split image of Darkstalker's Jon Talbain's win screen and performing a jump kick

Jon Talbain's extraordinarily expressive animations really sell him. From the way he catapults himself across the screen to the way he goes on all fours when crouching, every element feels vibrant and feral. However, outside the bestial attacks, Jon is also an expert martial artist. One of his special moves has him slinging nunchakus like he is Bruce Lee.

He's sharply designed, dynamic, and fun to play. Jon Talbain is absolutely iconic for a reason. He is a sterling example of a werewolf in video games. With any luck, we will see him again some time in the near future (perhaps in a remake or remasteওr).

1 Father Gascoigne, Bloodborne: The Tragic Terro𝕴r

Bloodborne split image of Father Gasvoigne in his werewolf and human form

Father Gascoigne is the first real boss of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Bloodborne. As such, he is also the first skillcheck. Starting off as another hunter, he aggressively pursues you through the graveyar🤡d you confront him in. Partway through the battle, he transforms into a gigantic, behemoth of a werewolf. His size alone will shake most hunters the first time they witness this transformation.

Fathe𓂃r Gascoignꦕe captures the tragic side of lycanthropy. Seeing a werewolf’s human side briefly wrest control of the wolf upon hearing his daughter’s music box is heart-rending. Father Gascoigne is an exampl🔥e of all the fun elements of werewolves which make them so notable, but he is also one of the few werewolves who remind you that lycanthropy is, first and foremost, a curse.
