Okay♉, let’s break down how we did this. On Metacritic we looked at the most popular video game publishers and took ten of the biggest, with the highest scores, and then ranked them accordingly. There were definitely more than ten, but we had to cut a few.
For example, Activision is huge with 830 games ranked on the website with an aggregate of 68. Some other companies, just as big, had higher scores so that’s why Activision wasn’t included. Ubisoft also didn’t make the cut with 971 games with an aggregate of 69. Okay, enough sharing. Let’s see h🀅ow everyone else did.
10 Sega (71)
Of 693 games, Sega has an aggregate review score of 71. Their highest reviewed game is NFL 2K1 for Dreamcast with a 97 while their lowest score belongs to The Golden Compass for PC with a 26.
That certainly paints an odd picture. Their best game was on their last console. Surely that doesn’t hold up as much today, rig🐟ht? Regardless of that, Sega continues to be a giant in the gaming industry despite not making consoles any more.
9 Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (71)
Of 345 games Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has an aggregate review score of 71. Their highest reviewed game is Batman: Arkham City for PS3 with a 96 while their lowest score belongs to Game Party Champions for Wii U with a 24. Warner Bros. probably isn’t one of the first companies one associates with video games as they are more well-known for movies. However, as they own a lot of properties, they have a ♌big stake in this market too what with Batman and The Lord of the Rings to name just two.
8 Electronic Arts (73)
Of 873 games EA has an aggregate review score of 73. Their highest reviewed game is Mass Effect 2 for Xbox 360 with a 96 while their lowest score belongs to Dead Space Ignition on Xbox 360 with a 35. Despite their output over the last couple of years, EA still holds strong in the 70s. High peaks like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Apex Legends help them keep afloat above their misguided attempts like Anthem.
7 Bethesda Softworks (73)
Of 204 games Bethesda Softworks has an aggregate review score of 73. Their highest reviewed game is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for Xbox 360 with a 96 while their lowest score belongs to Rogue Warrior for PS3 with a 27. Bethesda is shaping up to be the next EA and no, we don’t mean the good EA. Admittedly they still put out good games, but Fallout 76’s continued debacles followed by Rage 2 has us a bit worried for future projects like The Elder Scrolls VI and Starfield.
6 Sony Computer Entertainment America (73)
Of 544 games SCEA has an aggregate review score of 73. Their highest reviewed game is Uncharted 2: Among Thieves for PS3 with a 96 while their lowest score belongs to Kung Fu Rider for PS3 with a 36. Now this is technically different from Sony Interactive Entertainment, which is the rebranding Sony did in 2016. Their score is the same, but under this umbrella is just 84 games with the reboot God of War getting their high of 94 Bravo Team bring responsible for their lowest score of 45.
5 Microsoft Game Studios (74)
Of 391 games Microsoft Game Studios has an aggregate review score of 74. Their highest reviewed game is Halo: Combat Evolved for the original Xbox with a 97 while their lowest score belongs to Sneakers for the original Xbox with a 28.
It is kind of funny to see that even though the PS4 dominated the Xbox One this generation with generally favorable review scores from their first-party lineup, Microsoft managed to rank just a point higher. That said is 💮there really an exclusive Xbox One experience tha𒉰t is worth anything above any of Sony’s output?
4 Square Enix (74)
Of 494 games Square Enix has an aggregate review score of 74. Their highest reviewed game is The World Ends with You: Solo Remix for iOS with a 95 while their lowest score belongs to Final Fantasy: All the Bravest for iOS with a 25.
This does not include any of Square’s, or Enix’s separately released games. Square Enix is another one of those companies like EA that has one, or two games that help boost its ratings while a miserable truckload of trash piles up on the regular like Left Alive and The Quiet Man.
3 Capcom (74)
Of 552 games Capcom has an aggregate review score of 74. Their highest reviewed game is Resident Evil 4 for GameCube with a 96 while their lowest score belongs to Umbrella Corps for PC with a 36. Capcom is like the opposite version of companies in a downward spiral. They weren’t doing great for a while, but with the release of Resident Evil VII in 2017, the ship course corrected itself. This success was followed by Monster Hunter World, the remake for Resident Evil 2, the revival of Mega Man and Devil May Cry and the list goes on. We’re ex💯ciﷺted by Capcom once again!
2 Nintendo (76)
Of 640 games Nintendo has an aggregate review score of 76. Their highest reviewed game is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for N64 with a 99 while their lowest score belongs to the 3DS enhanced version of Urban Champions with a 37. Nintendo naturally deserves to be toward the top. Sure, like every company they make some mistakes like the Wii U, but their properties are almost always consistently good, or🐓 amazing. Nintendo is video games. Without them this industry would be a scary place.
1 Rockstar Games (82)
Of 106 games Rockstar Games has an aggregate review score of 82. Their highest reviewed game is Grand Theft Auto IV for PS3 with a 98 while their lowest score belongs to Smuggler’s Run for Game Boy Advance with a 41. Being based on only 106 games compared to these other entries feels like a cheap victory. That said Rockstar, like 💞Nintendo, has their own stamp of quality. They rarely release games, but when they do, they’re surefire hits that please the masses from casuals to hardcore gamers.
