South Korean internet provider SK Broadband is suing Netflix for the increased traffic and maintenance costs caused by the𒆙 popularity of Squid Game.

If you're yet to start watching hit TV show Squid Game, then you're probably one of only a handful of people left in the world not to do so. At least that must be how it feels at this point. Despite having only been added to Netflix a little more than two weeks ago, the gripping South Korean thriller is already on course to become the most-watched show in the streaming service's history. Sorry about that, Bridgerton.

While Squid Game has apparently already broken that record in the US, that's far from the only country in which the show has gained notoriety. In South Korea, where the show was created, Squid Game's popularity has been so massive that internet provider SK Broadband has been struggling to cope.

So much so that the company has decided to take legal action against Netflix. According to , an SK Broadband spokesperson claimed Squid Game's popularity has resulted in a massive increase in traffic, and therefore its services have required more maintenance. It is suing Netflix off the back of those claims. Netflix is currently reviewing the claim.

Netflix was already not too popular with South Korean internet providers before Squid Game shot to worldwide fame. The two parties have been in the Korean courts before, with lawmakers agreeing that Netflix and other services responsible for massive amounts of traffic should reasonably have to contribute to ISPs' costs. Amazon, Apple, and Facebook all do this in South Korea, whereas YouTube and Netflix, the two services responsible for the most traffic, do not.

The popularity of Squid Game will only get higher as word of it continues to spread.
