When we first saw Bugsnax during the Future of Ga⛦ming event back in June, we knew that there was going to be more than meets the eye with the title, but you probably didn't expect this. You are actually playing as a journalist covering a story about the existence of bugsnax—which apparently aren't just acce💛pted as real in this universe.

During Sony's State of Play, we got a better look at what we can expect from Bugsnax in a one and a half minute long video. Immediately, we see that we are seated at a desk, being told by our edior, C. Clumby Clumbernut—who is wear♎ing a hat that says "press" on it—that if we follow the bugsnax story, we are out of a job. She also calls the story  "another monster hunt" which is how we know that bugsnax aren't just accepted.

At first glance, Bugsnax seemed to be heavily geared toward children and possibly a Pokemon-like game where your objective is to capture creatures that look like various foods. However, at the end of that trailer, we see thatꦛ there is more than meets the eye to the story, as a monster co🔯mes out from the night and attacks the camera. Now, of course, we know from that we are not playing a mere monster catcher. We are, in fact, an investigative journalist tracking down a conspiracy theory.

What that conspiracy theory is, we don't know exactly. All we know is that our boss is very reluctant to allow uꦡs any time to work on this story and doesn't think that a lead from "Elizabert Megafig"—who we saw at the end of the last trailer—is worth anything. In fact, we are told that Megafig is a "two-bit con artist." Perhaps all of this has to do with the fact that the citizens appear to literally become what they eat—and don't seem to notice or mind this phenomenon at all.

Whatever is going on here is way, way deeper than anybody would have ever guessed when we first saw this g🗹ame. The original trailer introduced us to living food (all of which have googly eyes, by the way) that only exists on one island and implies that this is going to be a puzzle🍒 game or collecting the creatures. Then, we find out that there is a dark side, which was interesting to see. Now we find out that we are playing as a journalist and the character from the original trailer is considered to be a con artist?

Something weird is going on on the island of Bugsnax. We don't know if these creatures really exist, or why they exist. We don't know why people are turning in to what they eat, why they don't seem to even notice this, or why our boss thinks this is all a waste of tim🙈e. As a player, what you should do, is keep an eye on this game. It could prove to be a truly interesting dark horse in the next-gen era of gaming.
