Despite being understandably overshadowed by the Nintendo Switch in a major wa𒆙y, the Wii U just received an unexpected update out of nowhere.
When it comes to the great console war, for the past two decades (almost) the two heavy hitters have been Microsoft and PlayStation. That being said, it's a little unfair to claim Nintendo is consistently in third place. The trouble is, comparing Nintendo's consoles to Xboxes and PlayStations is akin to comparing appl♔es and oranges🅰.
Truth be told, Nintendo should probably be considered a solid number two if you only take into account units sold. The Wii is the third best selling console of all time, and the Switch has almost sold more units than the Xbox O🔯ne despite being released a full four years later. The console that came between those two heavy hitters though, the Wii U, was not as popula🎀r.
Despite the lack of interest from gamers in the Wii U and Nintendo's focus shifting to the much newer Switch, the awkward middle console recently received a new update - a Wii U firmware update, during the summer of 2019. We're not entirely sure how this update will improve your Wii U, but reports it will likely add "improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been ꦗmade to enhance the user experience."
It hasn't been so long since the last Wii U update as you might imagine. The console's firmware was last improved inꦛ September 2018. That being said, all of its updates for a while have been nothing to write home about. Simply "minor adjustments" like this latest one probably will be. It hasn't received a major feature update since 2014.
To put the lack of popularity of the Wii U into perspective, you need only compare its sales to that of the Switch. The Switch's sales are almost three times that of the Wii U just two years into its lifetime. What's more, at E3, Nintendo revealed that Just Dance 2020 will be released on the Wii, the Wii U's older brothe𝓰r, and the Switch, but not on the console released between them. That one really must have hurt Wii U fans.
