This isn’t a strange pivot, historically. If you’re old enough to remember actually reading your news in a daily newspaper that got sent 🐻to your house and that you could hold in your hands, you may rem🧸ember that puzzles like the crossword and sudoku made regular, if not daily appearances in their pages.

The crossword even has🧔 its origins in newspapers, with the first crossword appearing in the now defunct New York World🎀.

It makes sense that as newspapers moved almost wholly online, puzzles would too. But, as we all well know, online media has a problem – ad revenue doesn’t generate enough money, and it’s getting increasingly harder to reliably🌊 drive traffic to websites with Google’s ever shifting algorithm. Subscriptions, then, have become the de facto method of ensuring reliable income. But then we come up against another problem: fewer people are willing to subscribe to news sources when they can just get all their information from social media for free.

The New York Times has always been at the forefront of ‘games’ – its crossword was famous even before it shifted online. But since 2014, the Times has leveraged its digital daily games more and more, culminating in 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:the purchase of Wordle after the web game went viral. , NYT puzzles were played 11.1 billion times in 2024. that more time is spent on the NYT’s games than on its news. that it’s the Times’ non-news products that are keeping it afloat as online media suffers. But Money From Game Subscriptions Let News Organisations Off The Hook

It feels like nearly every major news organisation has attempted to follow in NYT’s footsteps. The Atlantic, for instance, in an attempt to draw in subscribers. Vulture has a pair of cinema-specific games alongside its crosswords. My favourite independent daily puzzle site, Puzzmo, , which owns the Sa𝓡n Francisco Chronicle, Cosmopolitan, and Esquire.

The thing about subscribing to a news website for its games is that you’re funding its reporting, regardless of whether you’re actually reading that news or not. That may become a problem for subscribers when that website starts shifting its editorial policy to align with an increasingly poli𝓰tically right-leaning world. We’ve seen renewed calls for people to cancel their NYT subscriptions when it published an article about Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, that .

When you’re subscribed for news, it’s easy to see what you’re funding. You either agree with, or at least support the𝓰 publication’s coverage of, certain news stories and angles. Disagree or find them distasteful, untrue, or simply not what you want to read about, and you pull your funding.

When you’re only seeing Wordle, you don’t actually understand what you’re paying for. The problem, broadly, is less about what is actually being pu🉐blished and more about the fact the people paying for it are completely unaware.

The New York Times has also come under fire for “inaccurate, irresponsible coverage of the transgender community”. that NYT, alongside other major newspapers like the Washington Post and Los Angeles Time, showed a consistent bias against Palestinians when reporting on the war in Gaza. News subscribers saw this coverage, and decided whether to continue subscriꦉbing. Games subscribers, theoretically, did not see it at all.

It’s impossible♏ to say how many people are consistently giving money and clicks to news websites whose editorial policies they disagree with. The reality of media websites becoming games-first, news-second is that they’re no longer as accountable to readers – the people they get the most money and consistent traffic from aren’t there for the new♐s, after all.
