Along the way, they get to rub shoulders with a number of professional snowboarders, several of which were voiced by real-world athletes. Unfortunately, their skills on the slopes didn't extend to recording voiceover in a sound booth, so the performances in the game end up sounding flat and unconvincing as a result. The other voice actors weren't particularly great, either, coming across as overly playful. So depending on your tolerance for cringeworthy dialogue with flat deliveries, you might find yourself inclined to skip the cutscenes.

For a game developed by a relatively small indie team, Shredders looks quite good. The environments look nearly photorealistic sometimes, with dynamic lighting that shifts according to the time of day, and snow that deforms accurately as players carve through it. All of those visual highlights come at a price though, as the frame rate within the game tends to buckle whenever there is too much stuff going on at the same time. On the surface, the controls in Shredders appear to be quite intuitive. You prime your in-game character for a jump by holding the right trigger while both thumbsticks can be used to twist your body. Release when you're ready to go airborne and watch as you get flung through the air, during which time you can chain together a number of tricks.
Landing requires ensuring that your character is properly aligned, but in the event that you eat some snow, you can always use the handy rewind option to go back a few seconds. The problem is: that doesn't always work when you need it to, due to the unresponsiveness of the controls. While the mountainous vistas in Shredders can look great under the right conditions, the whole thing can't help but feel very dull and empty. Instead, all you get is a scattering of other players while you are connected online, all moving at choppy frame rates.
Games like Steep and, more recently Riders Republic, have shown what an open-world extreme sports game can ꦬlook like, with loads of players and activities as far a🐠s the eye can see, all beckoning the player to come and play. Compared to that, the Frozen Wood resort and its surrounding areas look nearly abandoned and devoid of activity. We suspect that the inherent barrenness might have been borne out of a desire not to tank the performance, but it would still be nice if the developers managed to strike a balance between the two.
