A brand-new strategy title set entirely in the ancient world, with one of Civilization IV’s masterminds at the helm? Don’t mind if we do!
For a lot of gamers, the Civilization series is the very last word in strategy titlℱes. Since the 𝓡first release way back in 1991, the franchise has been challenging players to build an empire that stands the test of time.
As the franchise has progressed, new and creative ways to ‘win’ have been introduced, from plain old military might to the space race and scientific advancements. Campaigns can be as long, short and varied as the player would like, making for a strategic yet accessible experience perfect for players of all skill levels. The question is, can Civilization IV lead designer Soren Johnson bring all the best elements of the series to his new title, Old World?
As reports, the title is meant literally: the game’s set entirely in the ancient era (“roughly modeling the Mediterranean region in the period from the rise of early Iron Age civilizations until the height of European antiquity”), so there’s no space race here. In this early stage of the game’s development, it plays very similarly to Civilization, with some unique wrinkles of its own.
Sites for cities, for instance, are set at the beginning of the game, necessitating an aggressive rush for them. Meanwhile, the leader of your chosen faction (Rome, Greece, Carthage and so on) is a ‘character’ in their own right, meaning that they have more of a direct impact on proceedings but are also more vulnerable. It’s early days at the moment, but strategy fans will want to keep a close eye on what Soren Johnson is cooking up next with Old World.
