Settling on the coast won't provide fresh water unless you're lucky enough to also have a lake or river nearby, so an early Granary to provide extra Housing can be useful.

Grasslands are a darker green than Plains, making it ea💙sy to tell the difference.

3 𒆙 Far From Other Civs
You might not have a lot of choice in the matter, especially on higher difficulties where AI players get bonus Settlers, but it's a good idea to keep your early cities far from your neighbors. It gives your cities room to grow, and the lack of border friction makes it less likely that other civilizations will declare a Surprise War.
When settling a new city, look for Loyalty modifiers on the map. These indicate how large of a Loyalty penalty the city will suffer from proximity to established enemy cities. Avoid settling on tiles that have any penalty at all, or have a Governor ready to take over as soon as you settle a❀ tile with aღ small penalty.
By the same token, don't worry if an opponent settles near your borders. As long as you have high population andꦗ Amenities, you can probably steal the city via Loyalty pressure. Try converting the neighbors to your Religion to speed the process.
Eleanor of Aquitaine is particularly adept at this strategy, since enemy cities that rebel on her border join her em⛄pire immediately rather than spending time as a Free City.
2 Near A 💟Tribal Village
Tribeꦰs are friendly tiles that provide small buffs when you pass by. Once the bonus has been utilized, the tribe will disappear, making them quite shoꦜrt-term.
If you are looking for a quick boost at the beginning of the game, a nearby tribe can prove to be quite helpful. These tribes aren't tied to any city-state or civ, but won't attack you like Barbarians will. Some potential bonuses you can obtain include gold, military units, more population, and tech boosts.
You don't need to have a Tribal Village in your borders; all you need to do is send a unit to visit them. Scouts are best for this. In the mid-to-late game, send Scouts along the northern and southern edges of the map to look for Tribal Villages that haven't yet been contacted.

The absolute best starting point is next to a Natural Wonder. These tiles provide powerful bonuses to cities settled nearby, giving you a major edge over your competitors.
