In case🅺 you haven’t noticed, video game adaptations are extremely in vogue nowadays. After the first season of HBO’s acted as proof that video games can, in fact, be made into critically acclaimed television, and Amazon’s adaptation followed soon after to just as much praise, it seems like every st𒐪udio is hankering to get in on the action.

Of course, it’s not all about the potential of making something that proves the video game curse is well and🦂 truly broken – it’s about the money. With adaptations of , the franchise, and raking in the big bucks (despite not being works of 🔯genius by any stre❀tch of the imagination), it’s pretty clear that studios are doubling down on the belief that IP is a surefire way of making buttloads of cash. Never mind that the movie happened, I guess.

Clash Of Clans Is Next In Line

CLash Of Clans Giants

Today in ‘news that gave Tessa a migraine’, it turns out that is also getting an animated television series, courtesy of . For the uninitiated, that’s Supercell’s massively popular mobile strategy game, which has grossed billions of dollars, making it one of the most profitable apps on App Store. Even if you’re no🅷t into mobile games, you’ve probably seen it in one of those annoying ads that pop up while you’re scrolling social media.

You may be wondering what Clash of Clans is actually about. Well, the answer 🙈is: not much! It’s fantasy-themed, I guess, but the game itself doesn’t really have a plot – it’s all strategy, all the time.

Netflix says the show will be about “a determined but in-over-his-꧂head barbarian who must rally a band of misfitsꦅ to defend their village and navigate the comically absurd politics of war”. Okay, sure. The ads and shorts have a slapstick sense of humour, and considering the director of several of those ads has been picked as the showrunner, and Ron Weiner from 30 Rock and Silicon Valley will be joining as a writer, it’s definitely going to be a comedy. If it will be a good one remains to be seen.

Netflix Has Made Good Adaptations From Nothingburger Games

Everything We Learned From The Arcane Season Two Trailer

Netflix has made successful video game adaptations before: , for one, and for another. Arcane is probably the best analogue in this case, considering it’s based in the universe, and League doesn’t havღe an established plot either. Arcane was a huge hit, as you may be aware – it’s won a ton of awards, is beloved by a strong fanbase, and caused many people to install League for the first time just to ask, ‘Wait, what the hell is this?’

All this to say that with the right strategy, Clash of Clans could be a good show. Netflix has done it before, so it could do it again. But to be fair, it also ꧋feels like Arcane is a good show in spite of its roots – the IP helped to get eyes on it, but it’s certainly not buoyed by any existing lore or story.

You could argue Minecraft is similar, and that movie is bad, though it is making a ton of money.

At this point, we’re just slapping brand names onto TV shows and calling them adaptations when there’s really not all that much to adapt. Write a tangentially related story, make some references to the gameplay here and there, and you’ve got an ‘adaptation’. Seriously, this has gone too far. Mass media is 🗹all IP, self-referential and tailor-made for profit. I’m tired of having video game adaptation-induced migraines.
