Nowadays, video games based on or inspired by certain intellectual properties are often hit and miss. But back in the days of the SNES and the Sega Genesis, there were some seriously good🧸 titles. And nobody did it better than Disney. From platformers to action games, Disney Interactive knew how the score on the home consoღle.
With today's consoles, certain vintage video games have gotten remade and remastered to much critical acclaim. We'd love to see our favorite 🐽Disney titles on modern consoles, but sometimes a port is all you need. Here are our picks for games that could benefit from a remaster, and games that should just be left alone.
10 ♔ 𒅌 Perfect: Ducktales
Consider this one the honorable mention on the list, as it's alr♊eady received a visually updated remaster flash remake, but many of these games would not exist if it weren't for the 8-bit genius that was the original game. "Woo-hoo" indeed.
Scrooge McDuck's platforming prowess could give both Mario and Megaman a run for their coins. The controls were tight, sharp, and easy to learn. The visuals were fun and very Disney. And do we even have to mention that awesome chiptun💎e soundtrack? Whether you're solving mysteries or rewriting histories, this is one sweet Nintendo title.
9 Remaster: Darkwing Duck (N🍷ES)
Capcom's Darkwing Duck was not a bad game, let's make that perfectly clear. It was a good game that suffered from finicky controls, bare weapon variety, and some overpowered boss fights. With today's gaming technology, t♋hese problems could be addressed and players could feel free to get dangerous again.
If you played this NES title, you might notice some similarities between the terror who flaps in the night and a certain Blue Bomber, and you'd be absolutely right. Darkwing Duck did share a game engine with Mega Man himself. A new Darkwing Duck game would definitely take notes but be its own incredible advent♔ure.
8 ꦯ 🌼 Perfect: Aladdin (SNES Version)
Whenever the subject of the Aladdin video game is brought up, players are always split between the SNES or the Sega Genesis version. Although the Genesis version is both sharp and visually impressive, we have to go with the version presented on t♚he Super Nintendo.
The games are similar but not congruent, and there's just something about the Nintendo version that screams clas🎶sic Capcom. The Genesis title got rereleased recently, so why not the same treatment for the SNES version? Fans would eat it up.
7 🎃 Remaster: Toy Story 🌃
The Toy Story video game was a platformer ahead of its time, especially ꧅concerning its sprites inspired by the CGI characters. Not only was it a decent platformer game, but it featured different and intriguing sections that kept gameplay interesting and exciting.
From racing around to pelting the claw machine with squeaky toy aliens, the game was anything but boring. The problem is the controls would be a tad complicated, and the then-impressive visuals have not aged very well. Some tweaking here and there and some Donkey Kong Country inspired upgrades might bri⭕ng th♉is classic into the modern era.
6 Perfect: Hercules 📖
Hercules on the original PlayStation would work extremely well as a modern game is released in today's market. With its hand-drawn visuals and use of depth along with some great gameplay, Disney had aꦡn extremely impressive action tit🐠le under its belt. It certainly has its fans.
Although some of the sprites could use a little sharpening, we can certainly see Disney Interactive releasing a port of this already heroic adven🔯ture onto modern consoles. No remastering, refurbishing, or thunderbolts from Olympus required. At least it's available still on the PlayStation Store in its original glory.
5 ♌ Remaster: Gargoyles 🦋
Gargoyles was one of the greatest TV shows Disney ever made. So it makes sense that Disney would want an awesome video game to go with it, right? The Gargoyles video game was essentially an action platformer with hack and slash combat and visuals that the Diablo series wishes it had.
But behind the gothic visuals and juicy combat their, unfortunately, lived a handful of serious issues. For one thing, the game was incredibly difficult, but not by intention. Complex controls and overly enormous levels made it easy to get lost and confused, and given the correct treatment today, players might be able to strap on ♊the leather wings 🅘of Goliath and soar.
4 Perfect: Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers 💛
The NES had plenty of side-scrolling platformer titles, but as far as cooperative experiences, there aren't many to speak of. Fortunately, Disney stepped in with this charming title in 1990. After all, could you really see either ♌of the chips working solo? Not in this game.
If it ain't broke don't fix it, at least that's how the saying goes. Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers might no🍬t have been overly complex or difficult, but it sure was fun, with or without your player two. The controls were sharp but simple, and lobbing colorful projectiles at various enemies never got old.
3 🐻 𒆙 Remaster: Mickey Mania
Who knew Mickey Mouse could be a platform game hero in league with the likes of Mario, Rayman, and Sonic the Hedgehog? Well, few games show that off better than Mickey Mania on the SNES and Genesis. The game is a side-scrolling platformer that takes you throughout Mickey's greatest cartoon adventures from Steamboat Willie to The Prince and the Pauper.
The game is good, but there's always room for improvement. The animation is phenomenal, but the sprites could use a little bit of polish. Plus, given the fact that Mickeℱy currently has a career spanning over 90 years, other levels based on other short films could be included. Maybe even unlockable content like costumes or skins reflecting the different eras of the mouse?
2 ♔ ⭕ Perfect: The Lion King
Easily one of the greatest, and most difficult games released by the studio during the '90s, has a spot in every Disney gamer's heart. Even with that infamous monkey level. It was so beloved in fact, it recently got a re-release along with Aladdin. we're talking some serious 16-bit royalty here.
Don't let Simba's adorable face fool you, this game is h🎐ard and we'll definitely test your patience and your platforming skills. Your pouncing must be on point if you want to have a prayer of surviving in this jungle. Whatever happened to "no worries for the rest of your days?"
1 💟 Remaster: Magical Quest Series 🌳
Once again we come to another Mickey Mouse title that definitely needs more attention. Not only is Mickey back for more platforming fun, but this time he's got a trunk full of costumes and gadgetsꦉ and gizmos aplenty to help him transverse through many wacky worlds.
Whether he's trying to rescue Pluto from th𝓡e clutches of Pete or Donald Duck comes along f๊or the ride, these colorful Adventures definitely need to be brought to the modern era for a new generation of players to experience them. After all, why wouldn't you want to take out cartoon baddies with magic spells and water balloons?
