After an abysmal 2020, Counter-Logic Gaming has decided to part ways with League of Legends coaches Ssong and Weldon.
Coach Ssong previously coached successful Korean teams like the Koo Tigers and Longzhu. Regardless of his former success, his track record in North America is less than stellar. He started strong, enjoying successful seasons with Immortals and TSM. The success, however, did not last. He has not coached a team to the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:World Championship since 2017. Coach⛄ Weldon has a similar story. After returning to CLG in 2018, he failed to find success, only taking CLG to the playoffs once.
CLG came into the 2020 season with fairly high expectations. The team nearly punched their ticket to the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:2019 World Championship with a fourth-place finish. Then, they replaced mid-laner PowerOfEvil with former world champion Crown and Biofrost with Smoothie in the support role. All signs pointed to the team competing for a spot at the 2020 World Championship. Unfortunately, those signs quickly went to bed, as CLG started the 2020 spring split in last place. The team then replaced the underperforming Crown with Pobelter. While the team did look a little better, the progress was not enough, as CLG fini♑shed in last place.
Baffling to fans and analysts, CLG went into the summer split with no roster changes. Normally a team that finishes in last place makes changes to avoid similar results. Nevertheless, CLG started off surprisingly strong, chalking up a 4-2 record. The success was𓄧 short-lived, however, as the team won only one out of the last 10 games of the season. Out of 10 teams, the top eight qualify for playoffs. CLG was one of the two teams that failed to make playoffs.
The issues with the teaဣm are deeper than underperformances from the players; the team never seemed to find an identit𝔉y. CLG's roster rarely drafted winning lanes, and even if they did, they never knew how to play around those winning lanes. Success in these areas often can come down to coaching, and many believe the pair failed to put the players in a position to win. As sad as it sounds, the organization is currently a shell of the once glorious 2015-2016 roster. Maybe another change in the coaching staff will bring CLG back to their former glory.
