The game takes inspiration from H. P. Lovecraft, The Twilight Zone, The SCP Foundation, and the novels of Jeff VanderMeer. If you're a fan of weird fiction, Control definitely has something for you. This is the story of Control.

WARNING: significant spoilers follow.

The Federal Bureau Of Control

The Federal Bureau of Control, or FBC, is a secret government agency that operates out of a facility in New York that can only be found by those who intentionally seek it out. The facility wasn't built by us, but is in fact a hub for otherworldly energy known as The Oldest House. The FBC is the organization responsible for cataloging, storing, and studying Objects of Power (OoP). OoPs are archetypal items (record players, rubber ♓ducks, ect) that have been mysteriously imbued with energy from other worlds and gives those who bind to them incredible powers. These OoPs are often connected to AWEs, or Altered World Events (it's the government after all, th🍷ey love acronyms), which are events that change the physics and architecture of our world by way of forces from... somewhere else.

The FBC is led by The Director, an inherently special individual t༒hat wields the Service Weapon, a handgun with the power to change forms. The FBC is guided by The Board, a voice from the astral plane that commun🍰icates with The Director through a telephone OoP. Acting Director Zachariah Trench has just killed himself with the service weapon, and that's where the story begins.

Jesse and Dylan Faden

Jesse Faden, the protagonist of Control, arrives at the FBC in search of her brother Dylan. As children in a town called Ord♓inary, Jesse and Dylan discovered a projector OoP with the ability to create doorways to other dimensions. The siblings and their friends encountered some seriously weird stuff through the doorways before the FBC showed up to claim the device. Jesse burned all of the slides, the individual doorways to other worlds, save for one. When the FBC came, Jesse escaped but Dylan was captured and brought the The Oldest House to be groomed for the role of Director.

Jesse has been looking for Dylan ever since. She is finally able to find the FBC with the help of a shimmering-spirit she calls Polaris. Polaris came through the projector and bound to Jesse as a child, and is now her secret companionꦦ that leads her to The🅷 Oldest House.

Upon arriving, Jesse finds the FBC in full lockdown. She meets a strange janitor named Ahti who calls her his assistant and seems to have been expecting her. She finds Trench dead in his office and claims the service weap🐭on, which transports her to the Astral Plain where the Board determines her to be the new Director.

Jesse spends some time meeting the FBC staff a🧔nd solving problems caused by The Hiss, an evil force that has been let loose in The Oldest Ho꧂use and is wreaking havoc by possessing people and changing the architecture of the building. Eventually, Dylan reveals himself; he has been overtaken by The Hiss because he believes The Hiss will help him escape the FBC.

Polaris Vs. The Hiss

Polaris, called Hedron by the FBC, had at some point been captured in physical form by the Bureau and contained within the facility. Director Trench had secretly kept one of the slides Jesse burned; the slide that connects our world to The Hiss. Slowly, The Hiss corrupted Trench, convincing him to move the projector out of it's safe holding so that The Hiss could come through andꦦ attack Hedron.

Dr. Casper Darling, the head researcher at the FBC, saw the change in Trench an🎉d suspected that he had been compromised. Darli🔴ng created HRA, Hedron Resonance Amplifiers, and passed them out to key staff to protect them from The Hiss. Hedron, or Polaris, saw the attack coming as well and guided Jesse to The Oldest House to save it from The Hiss.

Unfortunately, Jesse was too late and Hedron wജas destroyed. The Hiss almost took control of Jesse as well, until she was able to find the essence of Polaris still inside her and fight back. In the end, Jesse was able to regain control of the FBC. Dylan was left comatose after their battle, and Jesse, now the official Director, begins her mission of eradicating The Hiss for good.

Lingering Questions

Control introduces us to an entire universe of things both fantastic and dreadful, but in the end there is a profound sense that this is only just the beginning. The mysteries of Control are far from resolved, and much ꦕof the game seems to be set up for an even larger battl🧸e down the line.

Ahti, the idiosyncratic janitor who Jesse meets when she first enters the FBC, is one of the game's biggest mysteries. Ahti seems to exist outside of all the temporal and existential spaghetti that Control is made up of. He appears throughout the story to help guide Jesse through and give her hints aboutꦑ where to go next. It's possible that many of these interactions exist only in Jesse's mind, but it certainly seems that Ahti is connected to the Board in a bigger way.

Speaking of, we know very little about the enigmatic Board and the upside-down pyramid t🥂hat represents it. Similarly, Hedron and The Hiss are both very much a mystery. The Hiss seems to represent chaos, but why it needed to destroy Hedron, we simply don't know.

Control asks a lot more questions tha🦹n it answers in this first installment🧔. The lore scattered around the facility helps to define the edges of the frame, but the picture itself is still very much out of focus, for now.
