While a lot of good came out of the success of Critical Role, namely the popularity of D&D as a whole, the classes and subclasses that Matt Mercer and the rest of the group have lovingly created are easily one of the best parts. They are each made with care and balance in mind, making sure you don't find yourself too strong or too weak compared to your party.
There's also the fact that you get to see these custom classes being played during their campaigns. So, when you fall in love with one of their characters and just wish you could play something just as cool as that, this group of nerdy-ass voice actors have made it possible. Here are some of the coolest options.
7 Class - 🌊Blood Hunter
Despite the rather terrifying name, this class is unbelievably fun to play. It's what happens when you merge fighters with magical curses and powers. Ultimately, the Blood Hunter just feels like a Van Helsing style badass vigilante at a brief glance, but when you delve into it there's so much you can do with this wonderful class that it's worth anyone giving it a try.
You can choose between some fascinating Blood Hunter Orders, even giving your weapon an aspect of elemental damage without the need to spend any gold. On top of all that is the use of spells and more than one attack. If you choose this class, you'll be versatile and undeniably badass.
6 ♊ Subclass ไ- Gunslinger
Based on the legendary Percival De Rolo III, the Gunslinger subclass was originally brought over and mildly adapted from the Pathfinder game t🅷hey did. However, soon after their popularity increased, Matt Mercer brought it into the Dungeon Masters Gui🌠ld, and it was later made available to everyone who wanted to try it out.
Gunslingers serve as a subclass for the fighter, focusing on the Martial Archetype in which the person is skilled in the use of firearms. Just like Pathfinder, it involves grit points, breakages, and trick/called shots. All this and so much more make this class well worth trying out. After all, who doesn't want to put advanced warfare into a magical world?
5 Subclass - Order Of The Ly🐲can
The Order of the Lycan is a subclass of the Bloodhunter, focusing on controlling their lycanthropy through the use of Hemocraft, the Bloodhunters form of magic. It's pretty much the only time you'll really get to explore lycanthropy without succumbing to it.
It's a fascinating and exciting subclass to choose, from giving you a lot of benefits like resistance and additions to damage rolls throughout your leveling. Ultimately, while there are some cool buffs to this order, it's all about the way you can play this subclass while in their hybrid form. The opportunities are endless.
4 Subclass - Blood Domain 👍
The Blood Domain is a subclass for Clerics and seems to give off a darker perspective than anything many have played before. Especially since you can't really take any of the good alignments if you want to use this domain.
Essentially, the Blood Domain Cleric is just as versatile as any other domain you can choose from. However, it does seem to focus a♊ lot on control spells, often being g𓂃ranted manipulating spells to control the enemy. This can be incredibly fun to play if you like messing around with deadly bosses by casting hold person and watching them internally rage.
3 Subclass - Oath Of The Open Sea ♌ ✨
If you're playing a Paladin, you may want to look into taking this oath, just like the beloved Fjord did in the Mighty Nein.
It's an oath that's primarily used by those who are often near the sea. Typically, pirates, sailors, or anyone who has a background that's rather connected to large bodies of water tend to choose this oath. That being said, this connection to the sea doesn't mean you have to always be near water to be useful to the party or cast spells. Sure, a lot of the spells are focused on the elements, but once you try this subclass out, you'll never want to try anything else.
2 ෴ 🌟 Subclass - Runechild
When it comes to choosing a subclass for any character you choose to play, the options are usually pretty challenging to choose from. However, if you're playing a sorcerer and have watched the Legend of Vox Machina or the first Campaign from Critical Role then there's no other option than the Runechild. After all, who doesn't want to play a character that's as close to the legendary Gilmore as you can get?
The Runechild subclass is incredibly entertaining to play and brings in elements of magic rarely seen within Dungeons and Dragons. You end up being able to use runes to allow you to cast more spells, reduce the damage of an attack, gain advantage on certain skill checks and so much more. It's incredible to play, and you have the ability to have so much fun with this.
1 Way Of The Cobalt Sou𒁃l
Played flawlessly by Marisha Ray in campaign 🍃two, the Way of the Cobalt Soul subclass i👍s an absolute joy to both play and watch other people play. Even if parts have been tweaked throughout the campaign itself.
This Monk subclass is well worth trying out if you're looking for a bit of mental manipulation and understanding as well as just hitting them for a ridiculous amount of damage. It's perfect for anyone who wants more than just combat for their monk and is desperate for a more mystical understanding of the enemies they fight.
