Updated October 21, 2024 by Jacqueline Zalace: Need more base-building tips for Core Keeper? We've added a few more tips to this guide to help your 1.0 Core Keeper base really shine. Overall, your base design is up to you, but we can help you plan the initial layout to make the game go smoother.
Keep Your Main Base Near The Core
Your first base will probably be just a short walk from the Core, where your journey started. You might even have decided to incorporate the Core Chamber into your new home. Using this c🤡entral location as your primary hub is a great idea for several reason𒁃s.
First, the area around the Core is the safest area in the game. You'll never have to deal with mobs more danger♌ous than Slimes, and the Dirt and Sand Walls make excavati𒆙ng and renovating a snap.
Second, expanding your starting base is much less work than starting a new one from scratch elsewhere. By keeping your resources and facilities near the starting area, you can focus on upgrading rather than relocating.
Lastly, if your Explorer dies you'll respawn at the Core. Having your base nearby ensures that you can easily re-equip yourself for the journey to collect your lost items.
Look For The "Holy Trinity"
Scouting locations for your🧸 base can be tough. A spot might look good, but what if 🌟you set up camp but find a better location later? In general, you'll be looking for three things in a base:
Defensibility
A base with narrow entrances and exits that can be easily closed off with a door will keep mobs from wandering in and messing with your stuff. You can build any base to be defensible by placing walls as needed,🏅 but a cavern th🅘at has natural choke points will save you a lot of work.
Water
A large body of water contributes to the defensibility of a base since monsters can't swim, and it also gives you an easy way to refill your watering can. You can also go fishing while you wait for ores to smelt or crops to grow, ensuring you're never idle🐼 while handling day-to-day tasks.
Drill Nodes
Large chunks of metal ore on the map can be endlessly harvested once you've developed a Drill. Having one or more of these in your base makes it much easier to gather and smelt the ore efficiently.
If you find a l🍷ocation that hღas all three of these "Holy Trinity" elements, you can be sure it's a good spot for a base!
Remove All Spawner Tiles In The Area
This can take a lot of work, but it ensures that your base is a safe haven no matter where it is. Using your shovel, remove all Ground Slime or Chrysalis in and around your base. This will p♎r🅷event enemies from spawning there.
Slime is also just an♔noying to deal with, as it slows you dℱown.
You can save the spawner tiles in a chest to build a monster ranch later on, or simply fence in the spawner tiles as you find them and let nature take its course.
Build A Trap Room In Forward Bases
If you build a secondary base near a dangerous region like the Larva Hive, it can be beneficial to heavily trap the entryway. If you find yourself chased by swarms of angry monsters, you can ru🍨n home and let 𒀰the enemies fall into your traps.
Build a room with two doors - one that leads outside and one that leads to the main section of your base. Be sure that it's narrow so that the monsters won't have anywhere to go, and cover the floor in Spike Traps.
If you're pursued while adventuring, open the outer door, leave it open, and walk across the traps - Spike Traps don't trigger if a player character steps on them. Open the inner door, walk through, and close it behind you. Any monsters that survive the spike traps can be finished off after you've had a chance to recover.
Recycle Railroads Instead Of Building Them
The Forgotten Ruins include caverns that have derelict railroads and mine carts. By digging up these old railroads you can repurpose them to allow fast travel to and from your base. A railroad network costs a lot of Tin Bars, so salvᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚaging existing tracks in the Forgotten Ruins is a great way to save on this cost.
Place Your Chests Near Workbenches
Any workbench that lets you craft items instantaneously - that is, all of them except the Cooking Pot and Smelters - can use materials stored in an adjacent chest. By placing all of your crafting materials in a chest and arranging up to three of your workbenches around it, you can easily craft whatever yo꧟u need without having to shuffle your inventory.
This🎃 is one of🌳 the best ways in all of Core Keeper to improve your efficiency, and it's a simple solution that works in a base of any size.
Create A Dedicated Crafting Room
By creating a dedicated crafting room, you can streamline the crafting process by having everything nearby. Rather than running around to various parts of your base, you'll need to pop over to a station, make something, and then quic🌜kly go to another station.
Within your dedicated crafting room, you can follow the previous tip to have relevant chests near the station. Alternatively, you can opt for a large storage room with all of your chests. Whatever the case, it's a good idea to have an area where you 𝓡can get all of your crafting done.
Place Your Kitchen And Farm Together
This point goes hand in hand with the previous one. Oftentimes, you may find yourself running back and forth between your farm and your cooking station. Cut out this extra run by keeping them close together!
Including separate areas in your base like this can make it feel more 'grand'. Rather than having everything close together and disorganized, you can have a farming area with a nearby 'kitchen' that attaches to the side of your main crafting area.
Make A Trophy Room
Lastly, add some dominance to your base by building a trophy room. When defeating bosses and enemies, you may get your hands on a little trophy (especially after defeating the main bosses in the game). Rather than just placing this anywhere, we suggest making a dedicated trophy room for all of your loot.
The trophy room may also contain valuable loot that you want to keep separate from your other items. This loot can even be stored in the unique chests that you get from defeating the main bosses of the game! Regardless of the lay🅺out, it feels good to have a room showcasing all of your triu💛mphs.
