To some, Coromon, TRAGsoft's Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS era-inspired indie monster taming RPG may look like nothing but a mere "Pokemon clone" at first. Still, despite how it may look at first glance, it's so much more than the shameless ripoffs often seen on mobile storefronts.

While many monsters and mechanics in Coromon have some similarities to those seen in the mainline Pokemon series, there are also plenty of differences t♈hat should be highlighted. Many of these differences may never be seen in any mainline Pokemon games and give players a more extensive variety of ways to play.

8 ꦛ Detailed Difficulty Settings 𒁃

coromon difficulty settings and options

When starting Coromon, you're told to set your difficulty level, but this is more than just selecting between several preset difficulty levels (which is still an option). Additional difficulty options include, but are not limited to, discounted shop items, HP cakes being able to not only heal but also revive Coromon, selecting which Coromon to send out before the start of any battle or after an opposing trainer's Coromon faints, and even the ability to steal Coromon from other trainers.

Additionally, there are also nuzlocke-inspired settings and randomizer settings, so players can fully curate their experience and change it if they aren't satisfied.

7 Stamina Point𒀰s♔ Instead Of Power Points

coromon SP in battle

Unlike Pokemon, Coromon uses a Stamina Point, or SP system more similar to classic JRPGs, where each attack requires a certain amount of SP to be performed, with all of a Coromon's attacks sharing the same SP bar.

Coromon can also use a turn to recharge their SP in case they've run out or require a little more to perform a specific attack. Of course, like in other turn-based RPGs, there are also some items that can restore SP both during and outside of battle. SP can also be slightly overcharged when restored and help give a slight advantage.

6 Can Still Gain Experience When Knocked Out💝 🌊

Pokemon will not gain experience during a battle if they have fainted and aren't revived by an item. Coromon, however, can still gain experience after being knocked out as long as they participated in the battle.

This is particularly helpful when considering that Coromon's version of the EXP Share, the Sloth Gem and the Lazy Gem, respectively, are hold items more similar to how EXP Share was in older Pokemon games. This means that even if a Coromon a trainer is raising is knocked out, they won't need to worry about reviving it, because it will still gain some amount of experience.

5 Different Types Of Potential 𝓀 ▨

Shiny Pokemon have become easier to obtain in the past few Pokemon generations but don't offer much besides being an alternate color and aren't as special as they once were. Coromon not only has a feature similar to shiny Pokemon, but what color a Coromon is will tell you its potential.

Standard Coromon are the most common, are their species' default color, and have the least potential. Potent Coromon have an alternate color and have better potential values than Standard Coromon. Perfect Coromon are the rarest kind of Coromon to encounter, have the best potential values, and have a different alternate color from Potent Coromon.

4 ⛄Stat Alജlocation

coromon stat allocation

In addition to the experience bar, every Coromon also has a potential bar, and when leveled up, it allows the player to increase three of the Coromon's stats by one point.

You don't have to use these points right away though, and can wait until you have accumulated more so that you can use more points at once - this is helpful in case it isn't clear what stats would be best to increase when the points are first obtained. This eliminates the need for grinding by doing things like EV training and Super Training as well since a Coromon's potential is raised by just having them participate in battles.

3 Can Evolve Du♌ring Battle

coromon evolution

When Coromon meet the correct requirements to evolve during a battle, the battle itself will pause and won't continue until after said Coromon has evolved. This can help provide an unexpected advantage in a tough battle, where a Coromon on the brink of getting knocked out levels up after defeating another and gains the extra strength it needs to help it get through the rest of the battle.

While things like this have been commonly seen in the Pokemon anime series, this has never bee⛎n replicated in the games, instead♒ having Pokemon not evolve until after the battle has ended.

2 𒁏꧅ No Genders or Breeding

coromon battle

Similar to the first generation Pokemon games, the titular creatures in Coromon do not have genders. As a result, there is also no breeding mechanic in Coromon, as it seems unnecessary to have it with the potential mechanic alrea✤dy present.

This means players don't need to worry about hatching Coromon eggs, making sure Coromon are part of the same egg group, gender ratios, or any more complex mechanics that were added to the mainline Pokemon games after the inclusion of breeding. This might be a deal-breaker for players who enjoy Pokemon breeding but is great for players who have never been interested in it.

1 🎐 Multiplatform 🏅

coromon title screen

Of course, one of the biggest differences between Coromon and the mainline Pokemon games is that Coromon is available on more platforms, and even the demo was available on more platforms prior to the game's full release.

While mainline Pokemon titles are only officially available on Nintendo consoles, Coromon is immediately available on PC via Steam as well as iOS and Android mobile devices. Coromon also has a planned release on Nintendo Switch sometime in the near future. Like other games in the monster taming RPG genre, this helps provide play🌃ers with a choice rather than being exclusive to only one platform.
