The Truth Behind Vicarious Visions' Donkey Kong Game
The rumours surrounding Donkey Kong Freedom have been a hot topic for quite some time, with conflicting reports on what it actually was. DidYouKnowGaming's Liam Robertson (who also did stellar r❀eporting on the history behind Crash Team Rumble) has and confirms that something was once in the works, although it didn't go as far as some think.
In the video, Robertson confirms from his chats with anonymous Vicarious Visions employees that the studio did work on a pitch for a new Donkey Kong game, but that it wasn't something that was awarded to it by Nintendo. Instead, it was something that VV decided to try and get into production itself in late 2015.
The pitch consisted of concept art and a prototype that was planned to run on the next Nintendo console (which would have been the Switch). The demo being worked on was for a new 3D Donkey Kong game (which didn't have a working title but was codenamed "Freedom") set on a large open-world island with gameplay that focused on character movement. The game would have introduced grinding into the world of Donkey Kong, which the big monkey would have done by using bananas on his feet.
Previous rumours have suggested that Pauline was going to be playable in Vicarious Visions' Donkey Kong game, but this is something that Robertson wasn't able to confirm.
In the end, despite the de♌mo reportedly receiving positive feedback fr💧om Nintendo, the pitch for a new Donkey Kong game was actually rejected by Activision Blizzard in 2016 due to it wanting Vicarious Visions to work as a support studio for and . So, according to the report, it was in fact Activision that wound up rejecting Donkey Kong Freedom, not Nintendo like the rumours have long claimed.
