When you interact with Midas, he will spout a few lines of dialogue, and then unceremoniously mug you for a huge amount of your current gold. There's nothing you can do about it here, you'll just have to take the loss on the chin.
You'll encounter Midas a few times before you can do anything about it. What causes Midas to spawn isn't certain - it may be that you have to be holding a certain amount of gold before he'll come along to mug you.
If this is the case, try to accrue as much gold as possible in your downtime, whether through tax collectors, selling off unwanted materials (Follower Meat is a high earner!), or getting donations after S💞ermons. You have lots of avenues to wealth in this game.
How To Get Your Gold Back
After two muggings (potentially more, based on how the game calculates whether or not you've been mugged enough), you'll finally be able to retaliate.
When Midas begins a dialogue in a dungeon by calling you a 'cherished customer,' you know that you'll be able to strike back.
As soon as the dialogue closes and you regain control, hit Midas with your weapon immediately.
Midas will drop the coins he just stole from you, and you'll unlock the Shake Down achievement. We don't know whether Midas will attempt his little plan again after this happens, but just know that you can always get your money back with a little force.
