Edgerunners is a stunning adaptation. It looks amazing, and even with its exaggerated style, manages to take us back to Night City as we whizz through familiar locations and lore that fans of the game will immediately connect with. On the flipside, it presents a stylish universe that doesn’t push away newcomers🍬, but invites them in and encourages us to want even more.
I imagine many players picking the game up recently watched Edgerunners and hoped to see what all the fuss was about. Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t what it should be even after almost two years of updates, but it is more than playable on modern platforms and stands alongside similar RPGs in terms of scope and quality. It boasts a distinct atmosphere, a dense approach to world building, and pl✱entiful reasons to lose yourself in Night City, even when the overall experience is still wrought with shortcomings. This cross-pollination with Edgerunners has presented the perfect storm of viral popularity, providing us with an excuse to put aside its controversial past because we’ve fallen in love with the super cool anime and want even more of it. Social media is now awash with memes of gamers claiming that this game was always good, and it was the fault of toxic journalists and creators spreading bad faith arguments instead of actually taking CD Projekt Red to task for all of its failures.
I feel for the developers who are finally experiencing a sense of satisfaction from thousands falling in love with a title that has spent almost two years being a punching bag, and all of their work des🐷erves to be recognised and celebrated with the right caveats. But I can’t sit back and convince myself this was all part of an extended strategy, and that CD Projekt Red always intended for this side project to revive interest in its franchise so it could wipe away the strikes against its reputation. It’s bullshit, and we are fools for sitting back and allowing all to be forgiven when so many shortcuts are still being taken. Edgerunners be damned.
The anime has done everyth꧟ing right though, with CD Projekt Red getting ahead of its release with a patch that added additional quests, weapons, locations, outfits, and small pieces of world building that make the events of Edgerunners’ canon within this universe. After breaking our hearts with its tra⭕gic ending, we were desperate to jump into 2077 and find some sort of hope to cling onto, whether this be through taking up the tools of our fallen comrades or finding humble apartments that now sit abandoned. It was an emotional hook the base game has always lacked, but once that novelty fades away, we are left with a base game that still leaves so much to be desired. Perhaps we haven’t reached that point yet, and this spike in popularity will dwindle as the truth comes to light. Who knows, I might be wrong.
It’s worth noting that I enjoy Cyberpunk 2077 more than most of us at TheGamer. It made my GOTY list in 2020 even with all the bullshit, and its approach to dialogue and story remains a step above itscontemporaries. But this admiration only serves to m🦹ake me a more avid critic, and one who wants to see this game at its best when the time is right. So when a bunch of wel🥃l-intentioned weebs rock up and pretend that nothing was ever wrong with this garbage fire in the first place, I have to step in and say something.
Don’t act like this masterpiece has always existed thanks to Edgerunners, and attempts to sweep its soiled history under the rug is further proof that ga🌊ming as a medium needs to hold itself up to real criticism much more often if it hopes to evolve. Ironically enough, I wouldn’t be surprised if those who spent months dunking on the game are now out there singing its praises.
Phantom Liberty could deliver the Cyberpunk 2077 we’ve been waiting all thꦗese years for, and Edgerunners is worth watching whether you’re invested in this universe or not, but these positive steps forward shouldn’t take away from past failures or excuse them. CD Projekt Red is trying to leave the past behind, and in letting it do this, we are only making it possible for things like this to happen again🌱. Learn from this industry’s failings, or it will never change.
