Like most tech, the name is a bit of a mouthful, but I was excited to try it out all the same. Picking it up feels akin to grabbing a pen, which is great for fast-paced gunplay where you’re 🦋darting around, popping off heads all around you. Rapid-paced hand movement is much harder to achieve when you have a cumbersome rock in your palm, but the paper-like briskness to the Hyper-K makes it a breeze to handle. The lightness of the mouse extends to the clicks that are satisfyingly sharp. Whether it’s just holding it or pressing down a button, the entire mouse feels to the point, like it’s snapping into place just rigꦕht every time your hand grips it. That’s likely because it sports double Omron switches but, admittedly, the jargon baffles me. Nonetheless, comparing it to my Kone Aimo, the clicks feel more responsive and rapid, retroactively making my old mouse feel cumbersome. The Hyper-K’s clicks are practically instant, and you’ll get a lot of those swift clicks out of it - 20 million to be precise. It’s durable in spite of its stature, making it one of the better lightweight models on the market.
However, actually holding it is where it gets a little weird regardless of how you grip. The body is made up of hexagonal holes - a ‘honeycomb shell’ - which makes it feel slightly uneasy in the hand. You have lots of little ridges undercutting the smoothဣness you expect from a peripheral like this. In turn, you feel every centimeter of the mouse’s exterior, an unsettling amount of intimacy with something inanimate. But it extends from the body to the underbelly to the sides, letting you see inside the mouse while your hand wobbles over the bumps and curves. It’s not the most comfortable of devices and that underhands the sleek weightlessness, but the mesh is what makes it so floaty. Personally, I can handle a little bit of awkwardness in the grip if it means feather-like movement, but it’s easy to see how that will be enough to make or break buying this mouse for others. However, you’ll find that this is the standard for ultra-lightweight models, as anything under 72g is likely to sport this honeycomb shell.
That being said, aside f🔯rom the hexagonal holes, the mouse fits comfortably into your hand whether you claw or palm grip. Its ergonomic and sta🎃ndard shape make it perfect for either approach. I instinctively went toward the palm grip and it felt natural when I held it while shifting over to a claw-grab felt just as good. The lighter weight makes fingertip gripping much easier, too, as it requires far less force to move it around.
Aside from that, there are the two left-hand buttons that, by default, serve as “back” and “forward,” letting you easily navigate your web browser or Spotify, and the middle button on the top, just below the scroll wheel. It adjusts you🌼r DPI - of which there is a 16,000 sensor - letting you increase or reduce mouse cursor movement on the fly. The RGB, meanwhile, is what you’d expect. Your scroll wheel has a curved slick line of light down the middle, the back of the mouse has a rainbow curved bottom, and inside - through the mesh - there’s a green Dark Matter logo lit up. It’s not in your face - it’s nice and subtle, a refreshing change for a device with bright lights. You can even grab software that lets you adjust what color the lights are while also modifying what those aforementioned buttons do.
For only $39.99, the Hyper-K is a steal. It’s a brilliant budget gaming mouse that manages to hold up against some of the better, pricier models on the market.
