Players who loved the original game might miss being able to play a single run for as many weeks as they desire instead of the more linear progression system in Darkest Dungeon 2.

Newer players may not keep their eyes on this mechanic at the start, but older players will be haunted by flashbacks of their party being annihilated in dark halls with no torches in their inventory to inspire even♋ a modicum of hope.
In Darkest Dungeon 2, the torch is restored by helping people along the ♈path. The mechanics behind lighting the torch might♈ differ, but players unaware of their remaining light will suffer, or even perish.

While stress could lead to heart failure and cause players to do erratic things such as take their actions, skip turns, turn away from being healed, and so on, Darkest Dungeon 2 takes things to new extremes.
In the second game, stress points are a lot smaller, but racking up 10 stress points can lead to a meltdown. Worse yet, meltdowns can affect interpersonal relationships, and each of your four characters has a relationship with each other party member. This adds more weight to the stress system, but it's frustrating that players need to reach an inn to take any action to resolve severed relationships. Whether Darkest Dungeon 2 improved upon the original game's stress system will come down to opinion, but you need to give Red Hook Studios credit for shaking things up.

The original Darkest Dungeon was a 2D, minimalist masterpiece. Everything was gorgeously drawn, but everything was simple from the dungeon design to the comba🤡t animations.
Older fans will be shocked to see all the 3D elements incorporated in Darkest Dungeon 2. The battles feature 3D character design, and the animations are far more detailed. The biggest overhaul is when you ride the stagecoach. The world is fully 3D, and you can see the mountain — your ultimate destination — looming in the background. No player will deny both Darkest Dungeon games look gorgeous, but older players probably weren't expecting a full jump to 3D.
2 🌳 🅠 The Inn Is The New Hamlet
Inns are few and far between, and they act as your only safe place. You can buy items, improve battle skills, upgrade your stagecoach and prepare for the next route. Though they only offer a brief respite, players will want to take full advantage of the inn's services. This won't feel odd to any returning players who were used to doing things such as relieving stress, upgrading weapons, and recruiting characters at The Hamlet in the first game. The big difference is that The Hamlet was accessible after every run whereas the inn requires the player to finish a route and plan far more carefully.
