The Miller, like most bosses in Darkest Dungeon, is quite the beefy lad. Being a spectre, he may as well be immune to bleeding. This alone invalidat🌠es a few members of the roster when it comes to team building.
He can be stunned with a solid enough hit, but even then, it's rather unlikely. He is somewhat vulnerable to Blight, especially if you are packing some items to increase your Blight Chance. His health isn’t too high, his protection is reasonable and, providing you aren’t going in totally blind, he’s pretty easy to land a hit on.
How The Miller Will Kill You
The Miller can and will lay the smackdown on you if you don’t come in prepared. The wrong party, the wrong strategy, and let’s be honest, the wrong RNG, will result in a quick demise. The Miller activates twice per turn, and he will, in most cases, use one of those turns to summon a friend from the Farmstead. Once he has ♎a mᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚate, he will spend his remaining action to do an Area of Effect attack, or buff his summoned companion(s).
His phantom associates are mostly there to protect the Miller himself, so you will need to burn through them first if you want to land hits on the big man. Once The Miller has lost approximately one-third of his HP, he will unlock a third possible action that deals incredible damage to one character. This is enough to potentially one-shot a backline if he lands a juicy critical. The worst part about this attack isn’t the damage, however, it’s the self-healing aspect. The Miller doesn’t have a particularly large health pool, but when he can top himself up,🔯 it becomes a bit more of a nuisance.
How You Kill The Miller
Killing The Miller may seem difficult at first glance. He is quite the beast after all. The solution, however, is fairly simple - hit things really hard. That’s it. That’s the trick.
You want a character who can one-shot his summoned minion while also being able to poke The Miller. For this, you are looking at something like a Crusader, Leper, Highwayman, Hellion, or, in a pinch, a Bounty Hunter - although he requires more setup.
You will also want to take advantage of Blight. The Miller is fairly vulnerable to the status, and, since he activates twice in one turn, he will take Blight damage twice per turn. This can really stack up, and will easily out-damage his self-heal with only a couple stacks of Blight. Your Plague Doctor is amazing for this, naturally.
Just because you can hit like a truck doesn’t mean you can neglect basic strategy of course. Since The Miller is swinging that big scythe in a sweeping motion, he is dealing a lot of damage to the group. Relying on top-ups from a Plague Doctor is not going to cut it here, and the Occultist is wildly out of his league since he can only heal one character at a time. The Vestel is the Queen of this fight as her powerful single-target curatives will counteract The Miller’s super attack, whilst her Area Of Effect heal will keep the whole team alive and kicking.
Because this fight is very short, one way or another, so ignore stress. You will either win, or you will die. Stress won’t be a factorꦉ in either of these scenarios.
The Ideal Party
This party is the most generic party you could ever conceive. The Red Hook, The Regulars - whatever you want to call them, this is the layout you want. As a wonderful side benefit, providing you haven’t had any surprising deaths with your initial characters, you will have all of these guys from day one, meaning you don’t need to hunt down anyon𒀰e spec𝐆ific.
Crusader - The first position has to go to the Crusader. His kit has everything you want in this fight. He can deal massive single damage with his sword, he can whip out his scroll to hit positions one and two (great for dealing with minions and chipping The Miller) and you can even Mark yourself, making him a fantastic tank. Highwayman - The Highwayman goes in slot two, and that is, once again, because his kit is pure gold from this position in this fight. The Highwayman can attack enemies from every row, he can damage positioꦐns one, two, and three with his Area of Effect, and he has multiple options when dishing out a single target, high damage attack. Because The Miller deals AOE damage, you can even slot in a riposte for some free bonus damage whenever The Miller goes for a swing.
Vestal - The warrior monk herself. She will be on hardcore healing duty. Everything else is flavour. If he does a single target, you respond with ﷺa single target heal. If he goes for the Area of Effect, you respond in kind. Simple as that.
Plague Doctor - The final slot goes to the mistress of blight herself - the Plague Doctor. She has two roles in this fight - buffing and Blighting. Early on, you want to be applying d🎀am𝐆age buffs to your Crusader and/or Highwayman. Once they are able to land a guaranteed one-shot, you start throwing bombs. Stack that blight and The Miller will take care of himself.
