Darkest Dungeon was released in 👍2017 and was an instant success, far exceeding Red Hook Studios' expectations. A sequel is in the works, but no release date has been given. Frustrating as it can be at times, it is refreshing to see studios holding back and releasing 'when it's ready' rather than sacrificing quality and holding to an unreasonable deadline.

The original video game plot sees the player receive an inheritance from a wealthy family member who discovered dark portals beneath the Manor. Evil creatures fr🤡om the dark dimensions roam the estate and as the new owner, they are now your responsibility. The player controls an intrepid group of 📖adventurers who enter the manor grounds and must clean up the mess left behind, only to discover the true depths that their relative took.

In the original game, players could go to the nearby town to recruit would-be adventurers and send them to clear out the dungeons beneath the manor that are procedurally generated in a roguelike dungeon crawler fashion.. It will be interesting to see how this translates to the tabletop format and how it compares to established dungeon crawlers such as Descent: Journeys in the Dark or classics like Heroquest and Space Hulk. The most difficult aspect we see🐽 to reproduce will be the procedurally generated dungeons. This could easily be managed with a random dungeon maker using smaller dungeon tiles representing the larger components and some dice rolls.

The board game will likely play on the plot from the Darkest Dungeon video game but will be adapted for the tabletop format. Without any further details from either🧸 studio, all we can do is speculate; but what little we do know points to a Kickstarter fundraiser later this year with like🔯ly delivery set for about a year later.
