New visual novels come out every year; here are the best that launc🐠hed 💧in 2024.

SPECS Points are one of the more traditional elements of the game. They are used in conversation💜, as well as in realising the many characters in the game. They are pretty central to the game, and add a small degree of planning to how you talk to the Dateables in the game. So let's check it out in full now.

What Are SPECS Points?

Skylar beside Dorian talking about SPECS Points in Date Everything.

Right from your very first conversation with Dorian, SPECS Points are introduced. Becoming your immediate friend, he gives you five points in Poise, one of the SPECS Points, and right away allows you to use this on him in dialogue. Just as a test. So what exactly are SPECS Points? Well there are five of them, which are as follows:

  • Poise - Your overall composure, the ability to stand firm and professionally.
  • Empathy - The ability to, well, empathise and show emotional availability.
  • Charm - Being able to sweet-talk your way through a conversation with a silver tongue and honeyed words.
  • Sass - Sometimes, you just have to be a bit lighthearted in a mischievous way.
  • Smarts - A brain that can hold as much trivia and studies never seen before.

While each stat here has a description, they don't actually have unique effects. However, each Dateable also has a specific stat associated with them꧅, which determines the points you will get from their ending. However, this also extends to which SPECS stat would work best on them. Dorian represents Poise, and so Poise checks in conversation would be most appreciated by him.

That said, you don't always get a choice of which stat will appear in conversation, but it will always appear, even if you don't meet the requirements. You just won't be able to choose it. At least you'll be better prepared in a second run. If you are given a choice though, try to pick the one that most aligns with the Dateable in question.

What Are SPECS Points Used For?

The realization recipe for Skylar in Date Everything.

For the most part, SPECS Points serve two specific functions - to pass speech checks in conversation, and to Realise Dateables. The former is what you will come across the most, though there is no guarantee of when they will co🍸me up or that you will have the SPECS Points necessary to pass them.

You will only ever have a single chance in dialogue to use a SPECS check. If you miss it, that chance will never present itself again. For the most part, this is fine. You will likely miss out on collectables, though these are saved across playthroughs, so you can finish your collection another time. That said, SPECS checks will sometimes help you achieve a specific ending with a character, though will never fully lock you out of getting 🌠one either.

The Realisation is a bit different. Once you unlock the mechanic, you can see the exact SPECS points you will need to Realise each object, and you can Realise them as soon as you reach those point thresholds. Unlike regular SPECS checks though, Realisation will always requires points across all five stats, n🍌ot just one of them. For example, Skylar needs a fairly even mix of all SPECS to Realise. Therefore, it may take quite a while before you actually manage to Realise anyone.

Be careful not to Realise Skylar first, as this will remove the Dateviators and begin the ending for the game.

Beyond those two functions, SPECS points don't do much else. They're not something you strictly have to worry about as they will grow as you play the game anyway and you cannot inherently fail, though it can be fun to play a bit more tactically with them, helping you pass SPECS checks for a bit more i🌄nsight into each Dateable.

How To Increase SPECS Points

So now you know what SPECS points are and what they do. Now we just need to figure out how to increase them. Thankfully, this is something you will be doing naturally. When you get an ending with a Dateable, you will get five points towards a single stat. This occurs regardless of the 💦ending you get with a character. Whether they love you, hate you, or are just friends, you will get your five points.

Keep in mind that once you get an ending, it can only be changed with a Candy. You also cannot get more points from achieving another ending with the 𝔉same character. Each character will only give you five points once.

The points you get from a Dateable are not random, though. It is unique to each character, giving them out based on their own personality. While you could flail about randomly and gather the points as you wish, you can also check what stat each character gives points for. All you have to do is click on their profile in the Date-a-Dex, and you will be a coloured circle beside their name. This will be one of the five SPECS stats, and is the stat you will get five points towards once you 💎achieve an ending with them.

Again, while it is far from necessary, it does let you plan how you want to increase your SPECS points. Maybe you want to increase your Empathy so you can pass a check with Cam, or you are trying to reach a certain level across all your skills to Realise a certain character. Sleuthing through the Date-a-Dex to learn the SPECS each character represents 🧸lets you plan just how you will date each character.

You can even check the SPECS of Dateables you haven't met by checking them in the Da൲te-a-Dex, if you wanted.

Should You Pass Every SPECS Check?

A smarts 30 check with Diana in Date Everything.

When you talk with Skylar about SPECS checks in conversation, you can ask her rather directly if it is a bad thing to fail at one, and if it is a good thing to always choose them. She says, in short, that you should always choose them where possible as they're never bad, but also never necessary to achieve endings or block🦂 progress.

This isn't strictly true. While it doesn't ever lock you out of an ending, it can make it much, much easier to achieve. For example, Cam has an Empathy check in his later conversations. If y𒐪ou don't choose this, it is very easy to get put towards a Hate ending, where choosing it will all but guarantee a Love ending.

A similar scenario is true with Stella. If you choose to expose her pyramid scheme to Celia to protect Florence, you will be presented with an Empathy check. Fail this, and she will Hate you. Jean Loo is another scenario. His final conversation is a rap battle, and this requires u𒈔sing very high SPECS to actually beat him, the only real way of get💖ting him to love you.

So while they aren't always necessary to achieve each of a character's endings, it often requires perfect play to get certain endings if you don't have the SPECS Points to pass the checks in conversa🧜tion. Not a lie, but definitely a bit misleading.
