Well, this certainly isn't exactly how I pictured the year of Godzilla ending, but I'm not one to complain. It just doesn't have Godzilla in it.
From Toronto-based comes Dawn of the Monsters, a "co-operative kaiju beat ‘em up" where you play as a monster trying to defend New Toronto from the evil Nephilim horde. Where did the Nephilim come from? Who are these Ultraman-lookin' robots that fight alongside you? Those are questions that have yet to be answered in either the Dawn of Monsters trailer or any of its supporting documentation.
But do you need all the backstory right this second? It's giant monsters fighting other giant monsters in a giant ruined metropolis. You can use buildings as clubs, unleash laser breath or explosive claws, and powerful combo attacks that can knock these Nephilim bastards back to wherever they came from.
Everything seems like a pretty standard brawler. You move from one part of the city to the next, tearing through city infrastructure and defeating kaiju as you go. Each encounter is scored, and there's a manga/comic style font to everything that just screams Ultraman and its various monster-fighting spinoffs.
To top it all off, there's also a line of limited-edition vinyl action figures of several monsters featured in the game. You can head to to pre-purchase hand-painted figurines of Ganira and Megadon, although these are limited in number and the standard fiery Megadon is already sold out (leaving just Arctic Blast Megadon for fans).
