The free-to-play superhero MMO DC Universe Online is releasing on Nintendo Switch today. According to the official twitter account for th♎e game, all world servers will be taken down at 5:30am PT, with the launch on Switch planned for 9AM PT.
First released in 2011 on Playstation 3, DC Universe Online was later ported to PS4 as a launch title before arriving on Xbox One and now, Nintendo Switch. DCUO has grown enormously over the years through the release of episodic content, the most recent being Episode 34: Justice League Dark 🍰back in March. This is the first free-to-play MMO to be released on the Switch.
In DC Universe Online, players create a custom superhero (or supervillain) and can choose from a collection of powers and movement abilities. Over the years the optional power classes have grown to include fire, ice, gadgets, mental, nature, sorcery, earth, light, eleꩵctricity, rage, quantum, celestial,🧸 munitions, atomic, and water. Heroes are then unleashed on the various DC Comics cities like Gotham and Metropolis to team up and grind XP.
Despite remaining slightly out of the public eye, DCUO has received consistent updates over the last 9 years, w♎ith tomorrow's update being #96. The game ♋is consistently the highest grossing free-to-play game on the PS4 and was on the PS3 as well until support was discontinued January 31, 2018. The game reached 18 million registered players in 2014, and now that it is launching on the Switch, expect that number to grow significantly higher.
It's all but gu꧅aranteed in fact, as even returning players will need to make a new account in order to play on the Switch. There also won't be cross-play, but you can fight alongside the Justice League, so what more do you need?
As an added bonus, a Nintendo Switch Online account will not be required to play DCUO. This means that playing the base game is well and truly free, though the episodic content is definitely some of the best and well worth it if you're enjoying the game. There is also a premium membership available that grants acce⛄ss to all of the current content in the game for $14.99, or $9.99 billed annually. The game will take up a whopping 24gbs (pretty big as far as Switch games go) and there is no pre-load, so your first chance to download the game will be when it launches at 9:00am.
