Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden is dropping the D&D equivalent of a nuclear bomb i🌜nto campaigns, as it has been reve𒁏aled that there is a magic scroll that will summon a tarrasque into a nearby space, causing it to go on a rampage.
The tarrasque is one of the strongest monsters in each edition of to the point where it's often considered the ultimate foe. Previous editions of D&D required the player to perform ridiculous feats of heroism in order to keep the tarrasque down for good, such requiring the use of a miracle or wish spell to make sure𒁃 it stayed dead. The fifth edition version of the tarrasque isꦐ equally fearsome, bearing a challenge rating of 30.
Most players would choose to stay the hell away from a tarrasque until they were sufficiently high-level and prepared for the ultimate challenge. It seems that the players of Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden won't have to wait that long. Several D&D designers and freelancers have revealed some of the things they have been working on to , anꦆd one of the n🐼ew items in the campaign is the Scroll of Tarrasque Summoning, which does exactly what you think it does.
It's u𝓰nclear where exactly such an apocalyptic scroll would be kept, or why it's in Icewind Dale in the first place. The nuclear bomb analogy is apt, as it would take an alliance of all of the most powerful characters in the Forgotten Realms to take on the tarrasquꦿe at its current level of strength. It's possible that it's just meant to scare players, but we all know that one person in the group who is idiotic enough to ruin the campaign, just so they could claim to be responsible for destroying a chunk of Faerun.
It's also possible that the devs are screwing with the player, or that the scroll is impossible to use for some reason. The scroll is a highly tempting prospect to even the most level-headed player, so it's doubtful that it will be put within easy reach of the murderhobos in Ice𓄧wind Dale.
Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden will be released on September 15, 2020.
